Gym morning, and as usual, I found myself at work far earlier than any normal human would find acceptable. So. I'm bored and feel like posting. And, having nothing new or exciting to post about, I decided to spend a few minutes comparing and contrasting my varied fandoms.

My Fandoms

1. Farscape
Photobucket

Farscape was my foray into online fandom. The people who made up (and still make up) this fandom are kind of awesome. These are the people who introduced me to fanfic, fanart, costuming, conventions and all the other fun things that go along with fandom. While I haven't actively participated in this fandom in some time, I still value the friendships I made then.

2. Lord of the Rings
Photobucket

There are many fandoms lumped under the LotR heading. I was in it for the hobbit fic, pure and simple. This was the fandom that saw my first forays into writing and posting fanfic and I will forever be indebted to [livejournal.com profile] marigoldg for her challenges, and for the warm welcome my little stories and unknown self received over there. The people that make up the hobbit community are some of the kindest, most welcoming and supportive people I have ever met online and I am very grateful that you haven't all dumped me like a hot potato since I've drifted away from active participation in the fandom.

3. Stargate Atlantis
Photobucket
(The cast on this show changes too fast to keep up with, but the city never stops being beautiful.)

I'm very much on the fringes of this fandom. Every great now and again I'll write some little piece of fic that I'll post, and it will be mostly ignored. This is a much larger fandom, I think, than the others I've been a part of, full of bnfs (and wannabe bnfs) who make it a little harder to break into the circle. You have to be pushy and loud to get any sort of notice and that's not me. So I'm pretty content to just sit on the outside, read the fic and occasionally poke my head in to see what sort of wank is going on. Because let's face it. SGA is a wanky little fandom. Someone is always up in arms about something. But as long as I'm on the outside, looking in, I can find it all very amusing and then just turn away when it gets old. This is also the fandom where I gave in and accepted that if I wanted to read good, solid, well-written fic I was going to have to move beyond my gen comfort zone. I don't know why it is that I've found it much easier to embrace slash than het fic, but it's the way it went. So, even though I still love good gen fic like that written by [livejournal.com profile] miss_porcupine and a few others, I've embraced the McShep. This is also the fandom that convinced me that a well-written AU is a thing of beauty to be sought out. Not to mention the well-written crack (and yes, there is such a thing as well-written crack). God, SGA gives the best crack ever.

4. Supernatural
Photobucket

I'm even more on the fringes of this fandom. This is the fandom of bat-shit crazy. Now, don't take that the wrong way. There are some people over here who write wonderful stuff. Mostly, these are people that I've met in other fandoms who made the switch to SPN before me. These are the same people who intrigued me enough to get the dvds and watch this show (just in time for season three, which kinda tanked, IMO). However, this is a fandom devoted to incest and RPS, both of which just make my skin crawl. So I dip my toes in the waters of the fandom, pull them out, dip them back in again. I've written a little, posted a little, and even received some lovely comments, but I've made no new friends over here and I probably won't because these people are scary.

So. Those are my fandoms. Now it's your turn. Tell me about yours.

This is a great idea for a post! I'm going to have to steal it from you sometime :)

What you said about LOTR Fandom is just how I feel about it. I'm also grateful I haven't been dumped (yet) by my hobbit friends!

I'm only vaguely familiar with your other fandoms. My dad likes Farscape and Stargate but I think he likes the other one better (SG-1?). I've seen a couple of those episodes and I swear there's one character who is always sick or dying or in some sort of trouble. Just the sort of character I'd fall for but luckily I'm too disturbed by the guys with the...metal things growing out of their foreheads. :D

It's interesting to see the divide between SG-1 and Atlantis. I've seen most of SG-1 but never felt the need to read fic or be excited about it. I was entirely dubious about the concept of a Lost City of Atlantis spin-off, and was left uninspired by the first half of the first season. I think I like the (good) fic better than the show, still. And yeah, there is one character on SG-1 who is always sick or dying (or dead and being resurrected in one way or another). He's very much a wooby character and I have almost no use for him.

LOL! You know me--there would not be much point in it! I have lots of fannish *interests* (meaning I like the source material, and will occasionally read the fic) HP, all the varieties of ST, Star Wars, Narnia, etc. in fact most of the sci-fi or fantasy shows, movies or books I've enjoyed--which include Farscape. I've only ever written one non-LotR related fic, and that was for an exchange request (Narnia).

But I only have ONE True Fandom: LotR! That's where all my on-line (and some that became RL) friendships began (like you I owe a lot to [livejournal.com profile] marigoldg) and it's where my heart lies. If you give me a choice, I will always pick LotR, and hobbits most of all!

I wish that I could maintain that sort of focus on one fandom over the long haul. I ran out of things to say about the hobbits, I think (although I still do have one sort-of-WIP that I may return to at some point), although I still love them in my heart. :)

I don't think I'll ever run out of things to say about them! There's always a tiny little gap or an unexplored POV or an omnivorous bunny in the Shire...

I used to be in the Trek fandom, but lost interest after Voyager, though I still enjoy watching old episodes if I come across them on TV.

LOTR is my main fandom and the only one I write in.A story has to have Aragorn in it to appeal to me!

A friend from the USA introduced me to Supernatural, which I love watching as I so like the relationship between the brothers and the angst. Have you tried Cheryl W's fanfic.I also sometimes read sendintheclowns and Stoneage Woman has written one excellent story.

I don't read slash, smut RPS,incest ect in any fandom. Not my cup of tea at all.

I also like Harry Potter, Charmed and Stargate but don't read fanfic and just watch if it happens to be on if I watch TV,but don't make a point of it.

I have a lot of shows that I like but don't feel any pressing need to go beyond - shows like Bones or House, Grey's Anatomy or Numb3rs. I'm curious about the internal workings of my own head that make me crave more for some shows and not need anything beyond a weekly tv episode in others.

Cheryl W and sendintheclowns both sound familiar, so I'm guessing I've read at least one or two of both of their fics. I think my fav SPN fic writer is [livejournal.com profile] big_pink, who writes long, plotty fic, strictly gen, lots of focus on the relationship between the brothers in between some really well-written hunts.

I think my need to write LOTR stories is to fill in the gaps that Tolkien hinted at but never told us,at least that started me off.Now I want to write friendship stories about Aragorn and Faramir having adventures and their wives and children ect.

Thanks for the link, I'll check out her stories. Cherylw used to write LOTR.

My sister once asked me how many things I'd written even a paragraph of fanfic for and I gave up counting near fifty...

Biggest ones though -- not in any particular order

Man from UNCLE
Lord of the Rings
Alias Smith and Jones
Doctor Who
Blake's 7
Riptide
Trapper John M.D.
The Wild Wild West
Mission Impossible
Jonny Quest

The New Avengers
The Hardy Boys
... bored yet? Me? Not a chance!

Fun list! There are a few other shows, such as Doctor Who, that I've either read or written fic for, that I didn't put on the list because I don't have anything to do, really, with their fandoms. It's interesting to think about, really. Why some shows leave me wanting to go read every piece of fanfic I can find (or write my own) or talk to other fans, and other shows, that I enjoy watching every bit as much, leave me with absolutely no need or desire to seek out more.

You and a friend of mine started me on Farscape and I wound up loving it. I don't think I could ever write fic for it but I do adore it.
I also adore most all Star Trek, Torchwood, Doctor Who, Harry Potter and my very favorite, Lord of The Rings. I don't write any but LOTR but I do enjoy finding things in these other universes to read from time to time.

Oh, my Dragoncon conformation came today! Are you still planning on going? And what do you know about the Banquet deal? Is that something I need to have a ticket for? I can't tell really and the site doesn't give much detail. Dress up? Costume? Jeans? What is it, precious?

Yay for Dragon*Con! Sadly, I ended up having to cancel my plans - my con buddy has things she has to get done, and I didn't want to go by myself (as much fun as it is with a pal, I don't think I'd be able to enjoy myself on my own).

As for the Banquet. It is a separate ticket, around $35 dollars. I've never done the banquet so I don't really know the dress protocol, but I'm guessing it's probably not a costuming time - maybe something slightly dressy.

Oh, I hate that you aren't going. I was really hoping to run into you there and was looking forward to your costume. You always have the best costumes!

I know what you mean about not going alone though. I doubt I'd go on my own either.

I think we'll skip the banquet. It really doesn't sound like it will be a big part of things and I do want a bit of time to see Atlanta. Let me know if your plans change.

I'd love to see Farscape, to see what it's all about, but I don't think it ever aired here and I'm not sure it'll ever be on.

I think you would enjoy the show. It's on dvd and I'm pretty sure it's been released in every region, so it should be available somewhere in your area. And it's just *flails wordlessly trying to describe the wonder* it's an awesome show. One of those shows that I wish I could go back and see it all again fresh, you know?

They don't appear to be on sale here, but I could check out some on-line shops. We're just a tiny country, so we don't get everything ;-) I could always order from the UK, but that's often much more expensive.

heh :-)

I live in the Netherlands. Husband thinks they've been aired here at one point, but he isn't sure anymore it was that series. Yes, that was very helpful ;-)

I am pretty sure that the best way for you to find Farscape in your country would be via iTunes.

The DVDs are still in active distribution in Australia. If you have an all-region DVD player, you could order them from an online retailer there.

Farscape isn't on the air or "in print" for DVD currently in the USA, either. iTunes is our only option. Sony holds the DVD distribution rights, and I really wish they'd start making the discs again!

As much as the Scaper in me wants to gleefully exclaim, "Mwahhahahahaha! Got us another one, sucker!" *ahem* As participating in a fandom goes, you are all kinds of awesome. I met the various Pittsburgh Scapers because of you, enjoyed your company at a handful of cons, and am quite in awe of the DRD(s). I mean, hell, you and [livejournal.com profile] eve11 made something that impressed Brian Henson.

*bows* I am not worthy I am not worthy
