Jul. 22nd, 2008 09:11 amI got a letter from UND yesterday, thanking me for my recent interview and letting me know the position had been filled. It kind of cracked me up, since they never even spoke to me, let alone actually interviewed me. But still. It was an acknowledgement of sorts and I suppose that's good. I also got a letter from the University of Minnesota acknowledging receipt of my application. They seem a little better at the whole communication thing. I still don't actually expect to get an interview, but two separate people confirmed that they had received my stuff, so that's nice.
I love running. I don't get very far and I go very slow, but that doesn't matter. I love running. And I think I'm going to have to give it up. I ran a mile and a half yesterday and today my right calf (which is the culprit that's kept me on the elliptical so long) hurts quite a bit when I walk. And my left knee is being really, really cranky, providing pain and threatening to buckle occasionally. This is not good stuff. I can't justify the little bit of happiness that I get from running once or twice a week, if I can't walk the rest of the time. At some point, I'm going to have a decent job with health insurance and then I'll go to the sports medicine doctor and find out what's going on and how to prevent these problems and maybe then I can take running up again. But until then, I think I have to stop.

Date: 2008-07-22 01:52 pm (UTC)Re: running. What a bummer! I'm so sorry to hear that you are having knee problems; I can tell you love running from your posts. I hope that you will be able to return to it again some day. If you cut it back to half a mile would you still get the enjoyment? Or is that too far for the knees? My bum knee and bad ankles were why I decided to get a bike for my exercise.

Date: 2008-07-22 05:49 pm (UTC)As for running only half a mile, well. I normally do three miles, the first mile of which is warm-up. So only half a mile would just be the achy, get my body used to the run part, with none of the actual, good running. It would not be worth it. I suppose I'll just stick with ellipticals. I don't like them near as much, but they don't hurt me as much.

Date: 2008-07-22 06:05 pm (UTC)The leg lifts that LP suggested are commonly recommended for strenghtening knee ligaments, especially with weights if you have access to a weight room (don't use too much weight to begin with though - it will make you feel sick to your stomach!)
