I got a letter from UND yesterday, thanking me for my recent interview and letting me know the position had been filled. It kind of cracked me up, since they never even spoke to me, let alone actually interviewed me. But still. It was an acknowledgement of sorts and I suppose that's good. I also got a letter from the University of Minnesota acknowledging receipt of my application. They seem a little better at the whole communication thing. I still don't actually expect to get an interview, but two separate people confirmed that they had received my stuff, so that's nice.

I love running. I don't get very far and I go very slow, but that doesn't matter. I love running. And I think I'm going to have to give it up. I ran a mile and a half yesterday and today my right calf (which is the culprit that's kept me on the elliptical so long) hurts quite a bit when I walk. And my left knee is being really, really cranky, providing pain and threatening to buckle occasionally. This is not good stuff. I can't justify the little bit of happiness that I get from running once or twice a week, if I can't walk the rest of the time. At some point, I'm going to have a decent job with health insurance and then I'll go to the sports medicine doctor and find out what's going on and how to prevent these problems and maybe then I can take running up again. But until then, I think I have to stop.

so sorry to hear that. I'm sure you pre-medicate with advil and ice so if that doesn't help....One other thing to try is to do lots of leg lifts to strengthen the quads which alleviates some of the strain on the knee. Sit in a chair, straighten your legs and raise them above horizontal as many times as you can as frequently as you can. This really helps.

I know you have experience dealing with the person who can't run anymore (not that my running is as much a part of me as Mr. P's is) and I appreciate the advice. :)

Re: job applications. I guess the acknowledgments are progress! I hope that you will soon get some interviews and job offers! Keep sending those applications!

Re: running. What a bummer! I'm so sorry to hear that you are having knee problems; I can tell you love running from your posts. I hope that you will be able to return to it again some day. If you cut it back to half a mile would you still get the enjoyment? Or is that too far for the knees? My bum knee and bad ankles were why I decided to get a bike for my exercise.

I don't know what the deal is with my knee. It started hurting as soon as I started running - it's been cranky in general lately with the run just exacerbating the problem. I suppose it's just the joys of moving into the back half of my thirties - things don't work quite as well as I'd like them to.

As for running only half a mile, well. I normally do three miles, the first mile of which is warm-up. So only half a mile would just be the achy, get my body used to the run part, with none of the actual, good running. It would not be worth it. I suppose I'll just stick with ellipticals. I don't like them near as much, but they don't hurt me as much.

Good luck with the jobs and good luck with getting back to running. I feel deeply for your loss and truly hope that your body will cooperate with you getting back to actual running soon.

Well, considering that I took three weeks off and then one short run put everything back to square one, I don't think it will be happening again any time soon.

Runner's Repair Manual

I used to have a book called "The Runner's Repair Manual" that provided information about exercises to do to help heal specific common running-related injuries. Unfortunately, I lent it to a friend in Texas and it was never returned. But I bet you could find a cheap copy online or a free copy at a library.

The leg lifts that LP suggested are commonly recommended for strenghtening knee ligaments, especially with weights if you have access to a weight room (don't use too much weight to begin with though - it will make you feel sick to your stomach!)

Good luck with the jobs, dear! At least acknowledgement is better than nothing.

Yeah, I suppose them acknowledging me is better than ignoring. Now I just wish they'd actually speak to me. It's discouraging that I don't even make it as far as a pre-interview conversation with anyone.
