I've been wondering what was behind the love/hate attitude Boone shows to Shannon. Now we all know. Talk about your dysfunctional family! No wonder Shannon has been so peevish since arriving on this island.
Shannon as an evil bitch is more interesting than Shannon the whiny brat, but the problem is, there is only so much room for her particular area of expertise while they are stranded on the island. I suppose that's why she's been such a whiny brat. When Boone warned Sayid away from her, I'm wondering who he's trying to protect; himself, Shannon or Sayid.
Locke is still pretty interesting. I'm sure we've all wanted to bean Boone at one point, but really, tying him up and forcing an hallucinatory experience upon him is a little on the controlling side. It seemed so obvious that it was a drug induced hallucination when Boone first heard Shannon screaming and the monster crashing down on them, but I allowed myself to be distracted and started to wonder if it was real. Abrahms and Lindeloff are evil - telling us that someone is going to die this season has really made it so much easier to suspend disbelief and believe that characters are really in danger. I like that, even if it turns out to be manipulative hogwash when we get down the end of the season.
When Shannon was lying there, dead, my thoughts were split. One thought went like this: Well, I was sort of wishing they'd kill her off, so I think this must be a good thing (tempered by the little voice reminding me that it's never good when someone dies in horrible fashion like that). The other thought went like this: But she's just started to get interesting. There could be all sorts of good stuff now that we know what a twisted bitch she is. However, I'm expecting her to continue just being a whiny brat for the most part.
I was hoping to learn something about Boone that made me like him more, but that didn't happen. I think he's a child still. He's easily manipulated by those around him, and though he often means well, none of his skills (I'm sure he has skills) are of any use to him in this situation. Which could be interesting if we saw him trying to overcome those faults, instead of just blundering haplessly along.
Charlie moment (and sadly, that's all we got this week -- a moment) --
Jack: How are you doing, Charlie?
Charlie (looking very tense): How'm I doing?! With week two of heroin withdraw? Or how am I doing with Claire being abducted by the freak who tried to kill me?
Jack (after a pause during which he looks rather abashed): I gave you the aspirin for the heroin withdrawal.
Charlie grins, breaking the tension, and walks away.
It's about time someone started cultivating food. Of course, it will take time for any of the plants to grow enough to give food, and that little plot isn't going to be enough but it's a step in the right direction and I suppose they will enlarge the plot as they get more seeds.
All in all, I liked this episode better than last week, but I think they are focusing too much on these little things, and not giving us enough of the island. I'm not much of a soap opera fan, so I'd like to see more drama, less melodrama.
