Dear Stranger Friend,

Thank you for stopping and offering a ride to a complete stranger this morning. Even in a nice neighborhood, with someone who looks harmless, it's still a risk, and you were willing to take that risk. My fingers, nose and toes, none of which have frozen and fallen off, thank you. I hope that if you are ever in the same sort of need, someone as kind as you will do the same.

Sincerely,
Me

I'm glad it turned out to be safe to accept that ride!

A woman in her mid-twenties, decent car, decent neighborhood. Yeah, she could have been a strange psycho killer, but then, the alternative wasn't all that great and she really didn't look scary.

I'd feel safer with a woman too. I notice I'm not the only one to go a bit into worry mode upon see the words "stranger" and "ride" in the same post. It's pretty sad that we have to be socialized to be fearful of kindness!

Yeah, that's just about as cold as it gets in Pittsburgh. It's supposed to warm up now, however, so hopefully we're all done with subzero temperatures for this year.

I'm glad it turned out to be safe. This sort of thing happened to me once as well - on a very cold and rainy night on the dark fast track lane... the only time I walked home from work - , but I was too afraid although the guy seemed trustworthy enough. I felt it was foolish to walk in the first place but to get into a stranger's car would make me even more foolish.

If I'd been in a different neighborhood, or the person offering hadn't been a well-presented, twenty-something woman, I'd probably have responded differently, but luckily all the stars were in alignment and I didn't have to walk. :)
