It's been a while since I last watched my LotR dvds. I just finished Fellowship (the cold meds knocked me out partway through Lothlorien last night) and I found myself remembering why I loved this movie in the first place. Yeah, it has a lot of bits that I would have done differently, and some of the characters were butchered for comic relief, but the movies were made with a love of the story and the characters that shows through everything else. And seriously, the music alone would be enough to watch them. I suspect that I'll be watching The Two Towers and Return of the King over the weekend.

As always, the scene where Boromir comes rushing in to protect Merry and Pippin from the orcs breaks my heart. He redeems himself so beautifully from his betrayal of Frodo. And the looks on Merry's and Pippin's faces as they realize they're watching his death, whether he's dead yet or not, and how they pull their swords out and take the lessons he taught them to try to defend him as much as themselves. One of my favorite moments in the movie.

I also love all the Shire scenes beyond reason. The music composed by Howard Shore is perfect, the Hobbiton location is so amazingly fitting and the party is just fun.

The Shire. That music. Our hobbits.

These movies really changed my life for the better.

It's really kind of amazing when something as simple as a movie means so much to so many people. I may have mostly moved on from the fandom (although I still like to dip my toe in on occasion) but I wouldn't give up the connections I've made through the fandom for anything.

I agree with all your above comments. Boromir's scene with the music is just pure love. It's done so very well. I agree that Boromir redeems himself and how PJ did that scene was amazing. I love Sean Bean in this too. I can say easily that Boromir from the movies is one of my favorite characters. I loved Merry and Pippin's faces too and how they charged to attack the orcs when Boromir was dead.
The Shire is also beyond Love. Fellowship is actually my fave movie for I thought it at least was a better adaptation of the books than the other two movies.

Enjoy the other two movies and hope you feel better soon. :)

It's probably my favorite of the three, as well. Although I really do love some of the scenes from Minas Tirith in RotK.

In my estimation, the extended version of Fellowship of the Ring is the best of the three movies.

As I've said before, I take great issue with how Peter Jackson used Gimli, my favorite character, in the last two of the series.

The final battle of Boromir, and Sean Bean's performance in general, actually made me understand Boromir much better, understand that unlike Aragorn, he's just a man, flawed, but trying to do the best he can in terrible times.

I think everyone who's read the books has a bias towards one person or set of people in the story. Peter Jackson's bias seems to me to be towards Aragorn, and to a lesser degree, Legolas and Boromir. The Big People, in other words. Hell, he destroyed Faramir's character just to allow for character growth, but the hobbits and Gimli were represented largely as buffoons, with very little allowance for any of the growth that they all already had written into their characters in the books. It's the thing that frustrates me most about the movies.

Sorry about that. I love the movies, but years later I still get frustrated, as you can see, by their faults, lol.

I should watch them again too. I sometimes think about it, but it never happens. I love the Shire scenes beyond reason too. It's such a beautiful story.

I've tried watching them a few times over the past couple of years, but never made it more than a few minutes into whichever movie I put on. I had to wait until the story felt fresh to me, again. :)
