I'm beginning to suspect that this German Demystified book I picked out to relearn German was written by a demented goldfish or something. Seriously, the structure/organization of this thing is just wrong. I can ask you how much money you have, but I haven't been taught how to conjugate a regular present tense verb. And taking a quick look through the glossary, I see that by the end of the book, I'll be able to have an intelligent discussion about hedgehogs, but I'll be convinced that dogs no longer exist.

I'm doing well with it, anyway. Most of the vocabulary is sticking pretty well, and I remember a lot of it once I've been reminded. And it's good to have something to think about other than just sitting around hoping to get a phone call from Germany (all applications were due by midnight last night, so now I have a couple of weeks of anxious waiting ahead of me, one way or the other).

I'd better turn off the computer now, as meine Katze is staring at the power cord like it's a particularly pesky snake (Schlange).

P.S. I do believe Schlange is also slang for penis. (Hence schlong? Maybe so!)

I suspected that might be the derivation, lol.

Languages are fun, and German share a lot of words with Norwegian (katz - katt, schlange - slange) but I never studied it for more than two years in junior high. I'm glad you managed to pick it up again so easily. I'm sorry the book isn't what you wented though. Maybe there is another one?

I'm really hoping that at some point this book starts offering me some functional grammar instruction, and the vocabulary to say something more meaningful than 'Albert and Tina, is that your desk?' or 'Do you have a lot of money?'

I expect to take about a month to make it through this book, and then if I'm still feeling the urge, there are roughly a bazillion other choices, plus I could always look up tutoring options. So I should be good to go. :)

Well, good thing they at least gave you the word for cat! Good luch with the job!

P.S. that "luch" may look like an attempt at faux-german spelling, but in fact it is further proof that I really don't know where any of the letter keys are on the keyboard. And neither do my fingers.

That's the sort of faux german spelling I might commit, too. And clearly, I can't manage to even use a reply box without randomly hitting the 'post comment' button midway through my first word, lol. It's good that it's Friday. :)

Lol Sorry, I'm picturing Marlin Perkins (remember him?) being dubbed over with German. Ha!

Have fun with it!

I'm sure you could find that if you looked hard enough. Probably on YouTube. :)

Wow, you are remembering things you learned in school. Well, perhaps you learned them better than I did and of course it was alot more recent for you than for me. Hope it improves.
LSN and son were using Rosetta Stone to learn Spanish. I will ask them how it is going and let you know if that might be a good option for further study.

It helps that a lot of the words in German are so close to their English equivalents.
