My eyes glanced over the headlines as I opened up my homepage, and this is what jumped out at me.
Clinton unveils initiative to combat 'scourge of piracy.'
WTF, I wonder. Are we revisiting the eighteenth century and no one told me? I've been wearing all the wrong hair!
Now, I realize that since the pirates started grabbing, or attempting to grab U. S. ships, it's become this big issue, but this quote sort of sums it up for me.
"The modus operandi for a lot of countries and shipping companies up until now has been, 'OK, they hijacked the ship. They get it into port. Nobody's harmed. We pay a ransom. We've done a business calculation. so that's the way it is,' " she said.

Anyway, moving right along. I believe it's day 8 of the happy meme.
One, the Penguins beat the Flyers 4-1 tonight. Damn good start to the playoffs.
Two, I watched the game at a Martini bar with
eve11, her boyfriend, and another friend of hers from work. I had a violet martini and now, I'm not familiar with martini bars and martinis in general so I don't know if this is the norm when serving them, but I've never seen it before. We got a martini glass with the drink, and then another serving of the drink on the side, in a cute little glass nestled in a bowl of ice. So, although the drink price was high per drink, it was actually not any more expensive than the mixed drinks I normally get, since it came with two servings. Plus, it was very yummy. Happy making, you could say.
Three, my taxes are done and I'm getting a refund so all is well with the world.
Four, sad babies stopped crying when I came into the room and picked them up. I'm just naturally awesome that way.
Five, 'scourge of piracy' just made me laugh like nobody's business. You go, Hilary. Fight those pirates!

Date: 2009-04-16 03:07 pm (UTC)Piracy on the high seas in the 21st century! Who'd a thunk it? I've been paying a bit of attention to this for several years; it really is a big problem for international shipping, and any cruise lines operating in the Indian Ocean, not to mention the economic effect that trickles down to us consumers.
