Feb. 17th, 2005 02:22 pmI'm doing the fandom meme. I'm a sheep. I'll just have to live with that knowledge.
1. The character you first fell in love with:
It was a long time ago and I don't really remember, but it was probably Frodo. He was the main character, after all. Then in high school it was Legolas (the whole elf thing, you know) and then by college it was Merry and Pippin.
2. The character you never expected to love as much as you do now:
Gollum! When I was a kid, I loved the good guys and hated the bad guys and there was no middle ground. Since then, I've learned to despise the good guys and adore the bad guys and all there is, is middle ground.
3. The character everyone else loves that you don't:
Movie!Frodo. Sorry folks, but I just can't embrace the changes that PJ and company made to Frodo when they cast a teenager to play him. Don't get me wrong, Elijah did a great job, but I just don't like the way they took the character.
4. The character you love that everyone else hates:
I'm drawing a blank here.
5. The character you used to love but don't any longer:
I don't think I've stopped loving any character. I've just added new loves on top of the old.

Date: 2005-02-17 04:49 pm (UTC)The movies brought the experience to a whole new level of enjoyment for me, but in doing so sacrificed the character of Frodo. In order to dimensionalize Frodo they would have needed even more time, in which case the narrative itself would have suffered and you would not have had 3 movies.
In the book, the experiences that Frodo and Sam have on their journey would be a whole movie into and of itself. Their friendship is what made them both able to destroy the ring.
In the movie you get the sense that it was only because of Sam that they were able finish it.
