Being a bit bored this evening, I popped in a dvd. Up this weekend in the rotation, apocalypse movie of the week, 2012.

What I liked about it:

*the random appearance of Minor Actors I Know, such as Patrick Bauchau and Dean Marshall (oddly enough, I think I recognized both of them by their voices before I saw their faces).

*Chiwetel Ejiofor - the only other thing I've seen him in is Serenity, where he plays The Operator. And I loved him in that, even though I almost never love the bad guys. It was nice to see him not be the bad guy here.

Everything else:

*was mostly stupid. The sun is emitting neutrinos which have mutated to form a new kind of terrible microwave radiation which is baking the planet from the inside out (seriously, as far as I could tell, the entire premise of the movie was that the earth was a potato and the sun was a giant microwave). The world governments sell super expensive tickets to the richest of the rich to come live on arcs, and somehow no one else on the planet finds out until about one day before the apocalypse hits. The entire crust of the planet shifts about 1500 miles in a matter of hours and no one feels a thing (oh, except for the cities that got gobbled up, of course). Some random yahoo who's taken a couple of flying lessons is able to jump in a plane and navigate through a storm of flying volcano debris and a city falling down around him (apparently he's really good at dodging, but not so good at gaining altitude in order to avoid having to dodge). And the list goes on and on and on.

It was entertaining, though. Most of the people that you're rooting for are still alive at the end. A little bit of romance, but mostly just glimpsed in a few scenes, so not enough to be annoying. Enough fast-paced action and adrenaline to keep you from thinking too much about the utter ridiculousness of everything that you're watching.

I didn't love it, and in fact, I'm probably dumber for having watched it, but I didn't exactly hate it, either. I'm very easily entertained. Give me a pretty face (John Cusack and Chiwetel Ejiofor both fit that bill very nicely) and lots of fast action and I'm content.

*raises hand* me, I haven't seen it... prolly never will, since I'm not in to movies much these days... though I did see How To: Dragon, with the kinds. Heh, I think I got burned out as a kid on disaster movies like Earthquake! [in Sersoround! subwoofers that made the seats shake] I mean give me a guy in a bad mosnter suit destroying the world? OK, I could dig that, but maybe not somethin' like this... even though Jon's like a brother.

Gald you liked it though ;)

I'm a little bit of a sucker for these ridiculously bad natural disaster movies. I don't actually like them, but I have fun watching them, if that makes any sense.

I'm sure I'll see that when it comes to TV. I like disaster movies, good and bad, but haven't been to a theater in quite awhile.

Lacking cable and the patience to pay attention to what's actually airing on network tv at any given time, I'm devoted to my Netflix queue. I'd never see anything, otherwise.

I haven't seen it either. It's in my queue though. By the time I get to it, it'll probably be 2013...unless we've been wiped out, of course. ;)
=D

If we've all been wiped out, then you probably won't miss having missed the movie, lol.

I haven't seen it either. I'll wait until after 2012 to see if I'm still around to watch it, LOL!

Actually, I don't dislike disaster and apocalypse movies per se, but most of the newer ones are so darn NOISY. Makes it hard to multi-task while I'm watching.

I like the disaster movies more than the apocalypse ones. Not to say that a good apocalypse isn't just what I'm in the mood for on occasion, however.

I've noticed that NOISY trend in lots of movies lately. I guess the producers feel if they batter us with enough sound we won't notice the flaws in their movies. The new Star Trek movie was like that - so much noise I couldn't follow the plot.

The name of the movie was "Apocalypse Movie of the Week, 2012"? or just 2012? Clearly, I haven't seen it --- but I probably don't really count given the vast range of movies, TV shows, etc that I have failed to see.

Just 2012. The coming apocalypse in 2012 (as foretold by the Mayans) is getting the same sort of hype as Y2K did ten-twelve years ago. So of course there had to be a movie about it.
