Vacation picspam, not dial-up friendly
Jul. 28th, 2010 08:55 pmI'm home! It was a great vacation but I'm glad to be back in my own little apartment, with my two little kitties.
lyda_pearl met me at the Boston airport and we drove up through New Hampshire Saturday evening, getting to her place shortly after 10pm. Sunday we took a woodsy dog walk to Mascot Pond.
We parked along the side of the road and crossed this old railroad trestle, that is now a pedestrian path on the lower deck and a snowmobile trial on the upper.

Nearly the whole pack was getting out, except for Sundance, so we had to wait while everyone gathered. It was a gorgeous day, with half the sky covered in fluffly clouds with lots of blue, and the other half hidden behind ridiculously menacing black clouds. Despite that, we didn't get any rain during the walk, and the sun managed to show up a time or two. When it hit the plants just right, they almost seemed to be lit up from inside.

I took a ton of pics on this walk but I'll just pick out a few to highlight.
Tansies and bugs:

Turtle:

Look at those clouds!

The blackberries weren't really ripe yet, but there were a few good ones:

Mushroomy things of every shape, size and color:

These last mushrooms were so small I'd have walked right by if someone else hadn't pointed them out.

Mascot pond:

Luna moth caterpillar:

Green frog hiding under the bank of the stream:

After resting up from our walk, we went to dinner at a local pub/restaurant called Saalt. Great atmosphere and great food. We went for another walk afterwards and the sky was just so beautiful!

I didn't have my camera with me on Monday, but we went for another walk in the woods, a little quieter this time, and mostly just took it easy. It was less cloudy but super windy. A great day for sitting on the porch and reading a book.
Tuesday was full of clear blue skies. We didn't walk quite as much (only four miles instead of eight), but we took a boat ride. LP is a part time boat captain for the Heritage Park this summer, so she gets to give river tours.
I took this one while crossing a bridge. Mount Washington is there, in the background, but it's actually hidden by the clouds behind the peaks that you can see:

While waiting for the boat tour to start, I took about twenty pictures of the local osprey. He never got quite close enough, but this one isn't too bad.

Lily pads:

A family of juvenile geese following their mama (she's off screen to the left):

A boom pier:

Back in the day, two different logging companies used the river to transport their logs and they built these piers down a ten mile stretch of the Androscoggin river, then chained log booms between them, to separate the river. They're no longer in use, and the booms are long gone, but the piers remain. Some of them are still just rocky piles, but some are really overgrown.

That was pretty much the end of the vacation. LP and I were completely exhausted after being out in the direct sunlight for two hours during the boat tour, so it was home for a bit, dinner at Saladino's, a lovely little Italian mom and pop place with delicious lasagna, and off to bed very early.
Today was Travel Day. I met up with
antbee362 for lunch in Philly, and made it home just a few minutes later than I would have if I'd been at work. Mal and Zoe seemed uninterested in me, probably their way of saying I was gone too long, but seemed good otherwise. It was wonderful to see them. While it was nice to wake up in the morning without Mal's assistance, I missed them, and will be glad to have their company tonight.
