It is treacherous out there! The main roads are mostly fine, but the sidewalks are mostly just a smooth sheet of thick ice and in my neighborhood, so are the roads. Not ideal walking conditions. I made it off my little street and about half a block on the next street (heading down to an intersection) by walking on the snowy margin between street and sidewalk. After the intersection, there was no such margin. Just icy sidewalk and icy road, both going uphill. As I stood at this interesting juncture in my morning walk, weighing the pros and cons of road vs sidewalk and wondering how great the chances were of re-injuring my bad shoulder if I should fall, when a car pulled up and the older gentleman driving it asked if I would like a ride. He was going in my direction and was able to get me almost the entire way to work.

I had a similar experience last winter on an exceptionally cold morning, really too cold to be out, when another stranger (a young woman) also took pity on me and drove me to work. Thank goodness for the kindness of strangers!

I'm glad you got to work safely! I hope the weather and walking conditions improve substantially before you have to face the walk home!

Luckily, all the ice was gone by the time I was walking home. :)

Ugh! I am doubly glad I didn't have to go anywhere this morning. I am glad you got help in getting to work but accepting rides from strangers scares me a bit.

I wouldn't accept a ride from anyone who looked dicey but it's a good neighborhood and I was seriously worried about falling and getting hurt (or simply not being able to get to work).

Do you have a pair of cleats to put over your shoes or boots? Anyone who needs to walk in wintry conditions needs a pair! (Thx, LP, for sending me some!)

I don't have cleats. I could get some, I suppose, but we only have ice storms like this once every great now and again.

Even without ice storms, packed snow can get slippery, especially dangerous at traffic intersections. Those cleats have been a real benefit to me. KMart and WalMart both carry some version of them, and they are not expensive.

Glad you got safely to work, but echo the caution about taking rides from strangers.

End of mother-hennishness now.

I hope that the weather will be more pedestrian-friendly tomorrow!

I, too, would be nervous accepting rides from strangers (I've seen more than enough horror movies!). Hope the folks around you continue to be extremely nice (and not creepy in any way!).

Fifteen-twenty years ago, I would no way have accepted a ride from any stranger, but I live in a safe neighborhood and the only times a stranger has offered me a ride is on days when the conditions outside really aren't safe for pedestrians. And both times, they've taken me straight to work and been friendly and super appropriate.

There was a brief piece on the news tonight showing cars in Pittsburgh sliding down a hill and crashing into each other and poles and trees. Glad you didn't encounter that either on foot or in a vehicle.
