I was making a cup of tea and pondering deep thoughts, as I do occasionally. I was thinking about a very old episode of Sliders, in which the gang found themselves in a reality in which teachers (or researchers or something like that -- it's been a long time since I watched that show) took the place of athletes and actors as very famous and well-paid celebrities. Then I began applying that to my life.

If teachers were celebrities instead of actors, well, I'm assuming that college professors would be the equivalent of the big A-list stars. Then you have elementary and secondary teachers who would be possibly off-broadway but not bad. Then preschool would be off-off-broadway. Infant-toddler programs (my level) would then be somewhere along the lines of community theater. You still get some good acting, but nobody outside the small community has ever heard of you. It seems I couldn't get fame and fortune even if teachers were celebrities. Drat!

I've set myself the task of working on chapter nine tonight.

"Time to get started," said I.

"Okay, but first I have to check my flist," said other I.

Did that.

"Now, really, get to work."

"Wait, I need to check my email first."

"Um hm. Quickly please."

Did that.

"Can we please get to work now?" I asked plaintively.

"But, the round robin...must add to the round robin."

"Well, I suppose. It is writing, of sorts, so I guess it counts. But then we really have to get to work on chapter nine."

Ten minutes later... "There, that's done. Now on with the work at hand."

"Oh, but, I can't possibly work on "Courage" without a cup of tea and a snack. I have corners that need filling up."

*sigh* "Fine."

Made a cup of tea and thought deep thoughts. Munched on a granola bar.

"Okay, let's get this show on the road."

I turn go into my LotR fic folder and call up "Courage," read through the last little bit to get myself up to speed and allow my fingers to hover over the keyboard, pondering my next sentences.

"Oh, but wait. I was having an interesting thought while I was brewing the tea and I really wanted to write it down."

"Arggh. Alright, but really. This is the last thing. After this we must start chapter nine. [livejournal.com profile] pipspebble is waiting."

LOL I feel better now. I have a fiction that is stuck on chapter six, well five now, because I've decided to take out chapter 3 and turn it inot a short story because it rambles away from the subject, much like I do. I keep reading other people's stories and then writing quick, one chapter stories instead of working on my long story! But, tea sounds nice.....

I hadn't realized until this week that the tea had become a necessary part of the writing ritual. And I do the same thing. I should write but instead, I'll just read my flist in search of other people's fics...lol.

God, yes - I have three stuck at the mo' - one on chapter 3, one on chapter 4, and one on chapter 7. It's so much easier to write a short feww thousand words one off than work on something long...

This is the first long thing I've done and I had no idea when I started that it was going to turn into such a beast. I thought it would be a fairly simple story to write (it was supposed to be a Marigold challenge). The longer it gets, the farther it seems to be from it's ending. Of course I labor ridiculously over everything so even short things take far more time and effort than seems reasonable for something I do as an enjoyable hobby. Apparently I'm only happy when I'm suffering.

I tend to find my longer fics suffer *because* of Marigold's challenges - it's so much easier to write a short fic for one of those, than try and wrestle one of the Beasts (good word for them) :)

Hehehe. That is exactly what I do. If I'm not flitting from fic to fic changing one word here and a sentence there and achieving nothing, I'm half-thinking about getting down to my dissertation, but then it's "oh, but I need to start my challenge fic," or "I'm going to forget that idea for so-and-so if I don't write that down...blah blah blah." Why is it so hard to tell ourselves to do things?! I love your deep thoughts, by the way, lol :)

What's the topic for your dissertation? Too bad it's not something like "A psychological exploration of fanfiction and the fanfic writer." Then you wouldn't have to choose between working on the diss and participating in your favorite fandom :)

Heh, participating in my favourite fandom as research - excellent way of justifying my time! Unfortunately, it's on the psychological legacy of state/army terrorism in guatemala - not quite so cheerful :(

Well, I got the psychological part right, anyway, lol. The psychological legacy of state/army terrorism in guatemala, whew! Good luck :)

Thank you, I think I'll need it! That reminds me that I was wondering what subject you're applying to do your masters in?

LOL! Meesh, dear, as much as I love your LotR fics, it is time for you to start writing for the rest of the world, too! You have WAY to much flair with words not to share it with the public! (said the pot as she called the kettle black!) I loved the "...I have corners that need filling up" excuse. It's one of my favorites, too.

Thanks, sis. I'll keep that in mind. Trouble is, I'm not terribly original. Fanfiction is perfect for me because it lets me write but I don't have to create entirely new worlds or ideas. Just take what's already been created and add to it.

And let me just add, Miss Pot, that I am still waiting for you to get something up on one of the Marigold challenges. Put aside the one you never got around to before, get a starter for the next one (or even this one as there is still time) and write something! When you do that, I will start thinking about finding an original idea to work with. How's that sound?
