A couple of big thunderstorms rolled through yesterday afternoon. Power on my street was out for over ten hours, finally coming back on at 3 in the morning. I surprised myself by falling asleep quickly even though I went to bed really early and didn't have a fan running. Was not surprised to wake up after about four hours and find it completely impossible to go back to sleep. I'm used to lots of little, almost unnoticeable sounds in the apartment, like the fridge running, not to mention the bigger sound of the window fan cycling away. Instead, what I could hear last night was the cats moving around, scratching at the food bowl, etc.

But it was a lovely evening. I sat out on the porch and talked with the neighbors, all of whome were also sitting out on the porch. Instead of watching tv or playing on my computer, I stretched out on my bed and looked out my window. I have a west-facing window, so I saw the sky go from blue to deep orange/pink/purple to black. I saw lots of fireflies darting about the yard, which always takes me back to childhood summers. I also pretty much used up my phone battery talking to [livejournal.com profile] eve11 about costume stuff for close to an hour, which helped to pass the time nicely.

And now the storms have passed, the power is back on, and I must go to work.

What a beautiful post. I love your flexibility when things go wrong. Sorry you couldn't go back to sleep, though!

I'm hoping tonight goes better. I will, at the least, have a fan running!

I'm glad your power is back on!

I miss fireflies. I only see them when I visit family on the east coast.

For a couple of years they seemed to be disappearing, but this summer there's a lot of them.

*sends you fireflies in a jar*

What a treat to read this little piece. Beautiful description of the sunset and the small evening sounds, and especially the lightning bugs. I have been greatly enjoying sitting on my deck late at night and watching the fireflies also.
