I had an all-day workshop today, in which I made a necklace out of lace, fabric samples and old film spools; took apart an old radio/cd player just to see what was inside; played with the coolest blocks I've ever seen; had a long chat with a woman about costuming (she's just getting started on a Civil War era ballgown without having ever made much more than a pair of pjs before); and incidentally got some really great/fun ideas for the classroom. Some days I think I have the best job ever.

And then I left the all day workshop and raced what turned out to be a really terrible storm to work. I made it, just barely. According to the news, we got about three inches of rain in an hour. In a few places around town the flashflooding was severe - they reported six feet by the zoo - and at least three people were killed. Yikes! Luckily, it all calmed down to a nice, quiet drizzle by the time I headed outside again to go home.

And now it's the weekend!

We sure have been having alot of bad storms the last week or two. If we got another inch today which doesn't seem that unlikely we will break a record for rain in August. And note the date. Still 12 days to go. More of the same tomorrow predicted for here.

Hope you have a great weekend.

Yesterday's storm felt like a carry-over from the spring, when we had several severe thunderstorms with hail. Someone at work said the bad summer means we'll likely have a bad winter too. I'm hoping not.

Sounds like a great workshop. I'm sorry you had to go to work afterwards, though LOL.

The workshop was really good. I'm glad I was able to finagle approval for it from my boss even though I only found out about it last Friday (we're supposed to put in all requests at least two weeks in advance) and one of my co-workers was also off yesterday.

Workshop sounds like a lot of fun! I hope you get to use some of those great ideas!

Flashflooding is so dangerous; sorry to hear that several people were killed. Stay safe, girl!

Apparently there was some bad flash-flooding in the same place last month during a heavy rain. Perhaps this is something the city should look into.

OT: I hope the birthday weekend is going well!

Sounds like a find day at work! Your mention of the woman making the Civil War era ballgown gave me the idea that perhaps it was the Little House on the Prairie Dress and Pinafore that Mom made you when you were 3 that set you on a path to costuming glory.

I'm glad you weren't affected by the flash floods. In one report I read it said there were 9 feet of water covering Washington Blvd. It also mentioned the Highland Park is one of the highest parts of Pittsburgh, which came as a surprise to me, I guess because I spent most of my time at the top of it (walking around the reservoir, etc.)

The flooding was scary, but especially frustrating because the same area flooded during heavy rains last month but they're apparently still saying it's an aberration and no one wants to be the one responsible, so no one will be the one to step up and fix the problem, either.
