Today was resume-building day. In other words, a day of misery and crankiness unrivaled since the last resume-building day. I suppose I could have just kept using my previous resume, since nothing much has changed, but it was too long - two and a half pages of tiny font with half inch margins all around. Too much information for any of it to stand out. I formatted the new one with a different style, cut out a lot of superfluous information, and simplified it visually. (LP and ANM, I actually made some dramatic changes to it after sending it to you so it's not quite what you saw).

I didn't get much else done today, though, as the fight with the resume took about six hours and all of my mental strength. If I could just get a job in the library/archives fields, then building a resume for other such jobs would be easier. Today's task required a lot of creativity when it comes to finding ways to relate actual experiences with desired job skills, and I don't know if I was really successful.

But, I really need to find a new job. I'm hoping to find something by the end of the year, but that might just be wishful thinking with the economy still so sucky. Regardless, I'll continue to work on it.

This has to get easier/less misery and crankiness inducing once we are fully immersed in it, right? Or, at least when we all have marvelous new jobs. That's gotta be the way it works. Don't try to tell me differently.

BTW, I now do remember packing that HP book into a box of stuff I sent to you one Christmas. A lot of my grad school friends had been raving about it and saying I should read it, but I decided to let you test the waters! I don't remember all what else was in the box, but I think I put in some boxes of instant Thai food and other odd but potentially useful stuff. If I had actually read the book I would have had to pack an old unpaired sock or paper clip as an Uncle Vernonish gift.

Lol!

Incidentally, after closer examination, that job I found was not one I'm actually qualified for. Which I only figured out after I'd gone through the painful process of creating a woefully inadequate CV at HigherEDJobs in order to be able to apply for it. Note to self: skip jobs that are posted through HigherEdJobs.

My grad assistant, who is also on the job market this year, loves HigherEdJobs and insisted that I get a profile there. So I have (or at least an account). So far I don't love it, but I haven't spent much time exploring it. My goal for this weekend is to finally pull together all my basic job ap materials (Teaching version of CV, Research version of CV, Teaching Philosophy, Research Interests Statement, Teaching Portfolio/Interests Document and at least a generic cover letter). Then I'll start actually posting/sending stuff out and looking for additional openings. The whole process makes my head hurt, but it is unavoidable.

I am glad you are working on a new job. Why avoid all jubs on HigherEdJobs. I wouldn't eliminate any possible sources out of hand. Just me.

The HigherEdJobs listings are all academic, mostly faculty positions. I'm not inclined that way and neither is my resume. I'm really looking for a public library position.

Good for you, Meeshie. I know that must have been tiring, but hopefully it will be worthwhile.

Yay you! Resume building/revision is a painful chore. Good for you tackling the job and making a better resume. You are wise to make it much more brief (brevity is the soul of wit - who said that?). One of the things I did occasionally as a general do-whatever-comes-up person at work was to help my boss screen resumes as they came in. 2 1/2 pages of tiny print and small margins would not have found favor with Bossman. One page to a page and a half of good-sized print max.

Here's hoping your lovely new resume will lead to a lovely new job with excellent pay, benefits and job security!
