I shouldn't even be allowed to have a computer, I'm so hopeless with them.

Mine has been acting up a lot lately. It always seems to happen after updates are installed so when it happened yesterday, after an update was installed, I did a system restore. I'm not sure exactly what went wrong, but I lost internet, my dell dock (not a great loss) and pretty much everything else. Spent far too much time on the phone with Dell software support. Because they couldn't think of anything else to do, they had me reset to factory settings.

I had pretty much everything backed up, so I don't think I've lost anything vital, but now all my preferred settings are all messed up and since I managed to figure out how to get things the way I like it mostly by (lots and lots) of trial and error last time, I will have to spend a lot of time on trial and error before I figure it out again. Boo.

Sounds like Dell is trying to get you back to those pre-computer days, whether you really want to go there or not. Good luck getting everything set up again the way you like it.

Dell is not my best friend, these days.

Ouch. At times like that, technology just sucks.I hope you're able to get everything back up and running the way you want soon.

I've got all of my files and stuff back on the computer. Trying to download iTunes now. For some reason it is downloading at snail speed. Something like between 15 and 30 KB a second. Before the re-set, I was downloading stuff sometimes at over a MB/second. *sigh*

Dell is kind of universally sucky. We had nothing but trouble with them.

I've been less satisfied with each purchase. I wavered last time and finally went with the familiar, but that won't be happening again. They've definitely lost me as a customer after this.

Sorry. Just curious: what antivirus software do you use?

I'm really glad I backed everything up (well, everything but the tv eps I had downloaded over the past year - that's going to take a while to regain) a couple weeks ago. I could see the writing on the wall.

Well, at least you do eventually get there with trial and error. My skills are alot worse than yours. And I also don't have the persistance, I think, to continue as long as you do.

I just really hate spending time on the phone with tech support so I try to deal with stuff on my own first. Sometimes it backfires though.

I sympathize. My laptop has been back from the computer ICU and its hard-drive transplant for 2 weeks now, and I just got the WiFi driver working properly yesterday. Still haven't got the printer to reinstall correctly, and am only beginning to get to work on restoring and configuring all the extra software that I had accumulated over 3 years. Of course, since some of it was no longer relevant, I will have a lot less e-clutter when I'm done.

I only have a few things left to put back on. I'm downloading iTunes now (god, it's going slowly), then utorrent. Then start ripping all my cds back onto the computer. I still hadn't finished from when I got this new laptop last year, so you can imagine how long that will take, lol.
