Poor Boone. It's good that Jack listened to him and let him go. It would have been bad to keep him barely alive like that. Taking his leg might have solved the problem of blood pooling there, but there were so many other problems, none of which Jack had the ability to fix with his limited supplies. Boone was dead from the moment the plane went over the cliff, it just took his body a little while to realize it. It's no secret that Boone wasn't my favorite character, but he died well, like a man. Farewell, Boone. Rest in peace.

Now, wasn't Jack's flashback interesting? There's a wife somewhere in the background. Dead? Divorced? Waiting for her husband to come home? Jack's been sniffing around Kate almost from the moment the plane crashed, which doesn't speak of a man eager to get home to his beloved, but then, I wasn't entirely convinced that she was his beloved. That relationship looked like a train wreck waiting to happen. She thought she was in love with him because he 'fixed' her. Gratitude can do a number on people, trick them into thinking it's love. And I think Jack really liked her hero-worship of him. It was very validating for him to be able to always roll over and see the living proof of his skill as a surgeon. I want to know more about that relationship. I did like seeing him having a good moment with his dad. That was a nice touch, that conversation by the pool.

On to Claire. Did you not want to just hold her and tell her that everything was going to be okay? The poor thing was so frightened. That moment when she held her breath and refused to push -- what an absurd and yet totally understandable thing to do. She doesn't remember what happened to her during that week when she was abducted by Ethan, so it's only natural to fear that something might have been done to the baby. And her fear that the baby would know she didn't want it was too touching.

Once again Kate was called upon to be Super Woman. What can this girl not do? I like Kate okay when they aren't throwing her at Jack. I think her past is interesting, she's tough (and I like the tough chicks) but that whole love triangle thing just has to end. Then I can get more invested in her character.

There was a nice symmetry to this episode, of course, with the birth and death, keeping the balance of life on the island. I want to see how Shannon deals with Boone's death, how that affects her relationship with Sayid, whether it helps her to grow up or makes her retreat back into her little rich girl persona. I want to see how Claire responds to being a mother. She's had a month or so to adjust to the idea that the baby was going to be born on the island and that she would be able to keep it, but that knowledge has always scared her.

All in all, there were some really good moments in this episode, but something seemed to be missing. There was a lack of tension somehow, that left me feeling a little disappointed. I'm not sure what it was. Oh well, it looks like the last few episodes should have enough intensity for me.

Was Jack's last name mentioned before this weeks episode? Shepherd is quite a name for the unspoken leader of the lost.

Duh!

Now that you mention it, I don't think they've ever mentioned his last name. That's a testament to the slick writing they have on that show. With all the times they've showed various flashbacks for Jack, which include his mom and dad, you'd think that they'd let the last name slip at least once, but they haven't.

I think that goes to show that the last name is somewhat meaningful. I didn't make that connection last night, but it does go along with the coincidence-ness of the show.

I've been wondering what everyone's full names are, given that we also have a Locke and a Boone. I think of Locke as the key to the mystery of the island. With Boone, I remember from the Sandman series how often boons were mentioned. I had to look up the exact meaning:

boon:
n. A benefit bestowed, especially one bestowed in response to a request.
A timely blessing or benefit: A brisk breeze is a boon to sailors.

[Middle English bone, from Old Norse bn, prayer.]

We also know Hurley's last name, although I can't remember what it is, offhand. And dare I even mention it? Charlie's last name is Pace, although I'm not sure of the significance there.

Hurley's last name is Reyes.
I thought Jack's was mentioned before, but I don't remember when. I only managed to tape 2 eps so I'm not going to be the one to figure it out! I loved that we've finally seen one good memory betw. Jack & Dad. And while I didn't mind that Boone was the character that bought it, I really thought that the whole episode, apart from the Jack backstory was just "off" somehow, as if the writers missed some of the bread crumbs they left for us in back eps and got off track with the stories. I guess that probably means that we read more into it than was intended, and they have other ideas for our castaway friends!

I'm going to have to go back and find that episode. It will be so nice when the DVDs come out in September and I won't have to deal with homemade video cassettes anymore.

I thought his last name was mentioned in Sawyer's flashback, when he met Jack's dad at the bar, but I haven't had time to go back and check, so I could be totally off-base there.

But you're right that they seem to use significant names on this show. There have been a couple of articles that talk about the significance of Locke's name. I get the feeling that the creators of Lost have a reason for every decision they make, even the seemingly innocuous ones like choosing a name for a character.

I'm thinking that Jack's name was, if not mentioned somewhere in back eps, was written on something (his doctor's coat?) Dunno. I've been out of town for a week, with lots of catching up to do. Hopefully will get back up to speed over the weekend. And, man, oh, man, did I miss my flist! :-)

Welcome back, hon.

As neurotic as I am about things like this, I'm going to have to go back and double check those old episodes to see if we'd learned his name before.

*shakes head at own patheticness*

No need to shake the head. I was thinkin' of doing the same thing. ;-) Great minds DO think alike, no? If I don't I'll worry on it all weekend. I'll ask YS. He knows the eps better than I do, and is bound to have the answer. :-)
