Wow, what an incredible game!
Apr. 18th, 2012 11:25 pmDown 0-3 in the series, the Pens came out looking every bit as sloppy and undisciplined as we've seen them all series. They took two stupid penalties in the first two minutes of the game and handed over a goal on the first one. Then they took three penalties within fifty seconds of each other, two-thirds of the way through the period, giving up two goals in the process. The Pens were only down 2-3 but it was looking a little ugly. Then Niskanen scored a goal off the crossbar, Giroux and finally, Crosby's back (meaning Crosby gets credit for the goal) to tie things up. And the Gordon Staal (as one of the kids at work calls him) got his first goal of the night (and the eventual game winner) to take a lead the Pens never relinquished.
The second period saw the Pens chase Bryzgalov and score five more goals (including two more for Staal, to get him his first playoff hat trick). The Flyers started to get frustrated and rattled. The only thing that prevented a meltdown of epic proportions was the fact that the refs were keeping really tight control of the game. They kicked Rinaldo out in the second for attempting to murder Michalek. By the middle of the third, fearful of a bloodbath, they just started handing out ten minute misconducts for every single penalty, no matter what. There were very few penalties in the third, all coming from one scrum, resulting two Pens and two Flyers leaving the game. Everybody played nice after that.
At the start of the third, I thought it might be greedy of me to want them to go ahead and get just one more goal, to give them a nice even ten on the evening. Apparently Malkin heard me, because four minutes into the period, he scored number ten.
This series has already seen 45 goals scored, 23 by the Flyers, 22 by the Pens. That's already the most of any playoff series in league history, if I heard Bob Grove correctly, with at least one more game to come. Yeah, this has been a bizarre series. Both teams sort of abandoned the whole concept of defense, hanging their goalies out to dry. Fleury finally started to rebound in this game, not giving anything up after the first period.
It may be a little too little, a little too late, but I don't care. This was a fun game in a series that has held very little of fun in it. Friday will be another game, back at Consol, where the Flyers have pretty much owned the Pens for the past two years. I don't even care. The boys regrouped, regathered their composure, played a decent game of hockey, rattled the Flyers and prevented a sweep.
Go Pens!

Date: 2012-04-19 10:52 am (UTC)I'm glad you had a good time watching it, and glad Malkin got the 10th for you. Last night could have been a momentum changer, I hope so anyway. Go Pens!
