Back on the internet, yay!
Yesterday started bright and early, heading over to the new place before eight, so we would be there when
lyda_pearl's movers arrived.
eve11 and her BF arrived shortly thereafter with donuts and coffee (otherwise known as nectar and ambrosia of the gods!). So far, so good. LP's movers showed up just as the rest of us were getting ready to head out to the Budget truck rental place in Penn Hills to pick up my truck.
We got out there and were greeted with surprise. Apparently, they didn't have any trucks and so my reservation had been moved to the Baum Blvd location. Someone was supposed to have called me and given me this information, but no one had. So back into the car we all piled (me to provide the reservation info, BF to drive the truck, Eve to drive her car back - it was a complex system we'd worked out). It was already my pick-up time and I was worried that if we were late, the other location would give my truck away, so I spent the twenty minutes of the drive trying to call them. No answer.
We arrived at the Baum Blvd location and they had no idea what I was talking about. They had no truck for me. Eventually they looked at their reservations and saw that I had been added, but no one had notified them, and oh, look, no trucks! The guy there (who spent a good five minutes chatting with a friend on the phone before he even attempted to help us) made a few calls to people who were due to return their trucks that day, and one guy said he'd make an effort to get it back by noon (when that location closed). It was about 10:30 at this point. So we were in 'wait and see' land. We went for a walk, got some food, twiddled our thumbs a lot.
While waiting, I got a message from LP that her furniture didn't fit up the stairs (they make a 45 degree turn at the bottom, with maybe an 18-20" landing). Luckily, the landlord came over with the key to the unrented unit next to us, that has a straight staircase. LP's movers were able to take everything up through unit 2, out onto the roof of the lower portion that extends out further, and in through LP's bedroom window.
Meanwhile, we were still waiting for a truck, which never showed. Finally, Eve called U-Haul and they miraculously had a truck. So we hauled butt over there and went up to the counter. Guy at the counter: Um, nope, we don't have a truck. Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!!! But it was all just a mistake. They did have a truck, which they could let us have, for a grand total of four hours. Sign on the dotted line, get BF into the truck, and off we went.
We had to stop at Construction Junction to pick up a couple of free-standing closets, and by the time we got back to my place, we were down to just over three hours. Now, of course, I had a lot packed, but because of the mess of the morning, stuff wasn't really staged and ready to be loaded. But everyone pitched in and we managed to get most of the stuff into the truck, over to the new place, unloaded, and all the furniture moved to the correct location (did I mention that the free-standing closets weigh approximately a ton each? Very solid), and the truck returned with about twenty minutes to spare. Phew!
We made a couple more runs back and forth and ended the day with most of my stuff at the new place but the old place still a frightful mess. Exhausted, we all went to dinner at a local place called Big Jim's. Good casual Italian food, huge portions, decent prices.
Then it was home to crash.
Today we putzed around a bit, unpacked a few boxes, rearranged other boxes, and then made a run to Lowe's. My bedroom window just had really flimsy blinds, and there's a street light right outside. So I bought some thermal/blackout lined curtains and a rod, as well as a rod to hang the wall hanging my mom quilted for me several years ago. Came home, hung the curtains and the wall hanging, and then I spent all afternoon lugging boxes upstairs to my room, unpacking them, and then repeating the process.
Finally, I got over my cowardice, went down the to the basement, tackled the years of grime on the washer, ran a rinse cycle to hopefully clean it out, and did a load of laundry. Everything seemed to come out fine. Transferred it to the dryer. It's an ancient beast, all covered with rust, and I couldn't find anything resembling a lint trap. That didn't seem right, but I went with it for the moment, started it up and was reassured by the rumblings and tumblings. An hour later, my clothing was all warm and happy, but still very wet. I tried it on a different setting. Maybe two hours later (I got distracted by another project) my clothing was still warm and happy, but also still pretty wet. I pulled everything out, and then managed to find the lint trap, tear-shaped, two inches deep, set into the back of the drum. Absolutely full of lint. I suspect whoever used it previously never once cleaned it (possibly didn't know it existed). I cleaned it out but even the grate behind the trap was filthy. Luckily, Landlord left his shopvac in the basement, so I vacced out the back of the hole, replaced the lint trap, and I now have mostly dry clothes. Yay!
This evening, I finally felt I had wrestled the chaos satisfactorily to tackle the process of getting the cable/internet going. The cable is going to have to wait, I found out, because the end of the cable sticking out of the wall was painted over and won't attach to anything. LP said she'd try to fix it tomorrow, but we also have to go back to the old address and get the last few things out, everything cleaned, and all the trash out, so I can hand over my keys. That seems like an all-day project to me, and I have to go to work. Boo, work!
But, in one bright spot, the internet set-up went almost smoothly and we have wireless again. Good thing, too, because I was about bursting with internet withdrawal, after just two days.
