A couple weeks ago,
lyda_pearl and I walked in a Pgh Pirates' sponsored Epilepsy walk, for which we received tickets to this afternoon's matinee game.
I am not at all a fan of crowds, so getting through the sell-out mob to grab food and find our seats was very trying for me. I've come to the conclusion that I'm sort of a reverse bandwagon fan when it comes to baseball. I like it better when the Pirates are consistently sucking, because then if I want to go to a game, the tickets are cheaper (not that we actually paid for these, but prices are not cheap these days) and there's much more breathing room.
All the whining aside, however, it was a perfect afternoon for a game. Cool and breezy with lots of clouds most of the time (although even with the cloud cover and with being at the very top of the stadium, under the overhang and in shade the whole time, I still managed to get sunburnt on my forehead and chin of all places). The Bucs were in a bit of a mini-slump coming into this game, losing the last three games in a row and the first couple innings looked like they were settling in, unpacking and putting up bookshelves, content to live out their lives in this slump.
And then the fourth inning rolled around. Bucs went into the inning down 5-1, and came out of it up 5-10. It was the longest inning EVER! but fun. Bases loaded and McKenry walks. 5-2. Bases still loaded, Barmes steps up to the plate. Not having a great day so far, with two errors, he makes a pretty strong effort at redemption by hitting his first ever grandslam. 5-6. McCutchen doubled. Jones tripled. Walker and McKenry (again) got singles and suddenly it's 5-10.
That was, honestly, pretty much it for the rest of the game. The Padres were shaken and couldn't muster up any more offense. The Pirates managed one more run in the seventh, when Walker got a home run, making the final score 5-11. But somehow, the game lingered on and on and on. It took three and a half hours to get to the ninth inning. At least Hanrahan finished things off pretty quickly, so we few who lingered to the end of the game could finally go sit in our cars for an hour trying to get across town.
All in all, it was a fun game. Nearly our whole row was from the group that LP knows and I had met most of them during the Walk. I was in a bit of a mood when we first got there, but managed to loosen up and talk almost like a real live human to the guy sitting next to me. I will never be mistaken for a social butterfly, but I managed to be a caterpillar today, instead of the cocoon I usually imitate in social gatherings with relative strangers. So I count it a success.
Oh, and...pics!
lyda_pearl, happy to finally make it out to a game!

PNC Park, and one of the children sitting in front of us. Only one of the many obstacles that prevented me from seeing any of the important parts of the game, such as all the hitting and runs being scored.

The view of our fair city from the left field nosebleed seats.

Date: 2012-08-14 12:14 am (UTC)I have to remember to check the lost and found while we're there. I lost my watch and I'm pretty sure the last time I saw it was while I was getting dressed on Thursday.
