Progress has been made!

The raw materials I started out with this afternoon:

I dusted off my sewing machine to alter the cargo pants, just narrowing the legs so they're more fitted. I've got the striping pinned on one leg now, but getting that sewn on, by hand, is going to be a process of several evenings I suspect.

Much more satisfying was the leather girdle-type thing I wanted to make, since this costume doesn't really call for a corset but needs something.

It's about four inches wide and made of the cool, embossed vinyl I picked up last weekend, plus grommets, shoe-lace, and a metric ton of duct tape holding it all together. It would have taken ages and many very sore fingers to actually sew through multiple layers of the vinyl to make it properly, so I cheated.

Looks awesome! Is this for a Halloween costume for your annual party? I hope you have a great one!

Yep, this year we're doing Saloon at the End of the Universe. I'm going as a sort of steampunk gold miner/adventuress.

Looks great! (and it reminds me that I should sew a button on one pair of pants and/or hem another pair so that I will have some options of clothes to wear to work this week. Groan.)

One reason I'm unsure about the party is that the whole costume thing seems a bit overwhelming.

Well, [livejournal.com profile] eve11 and I put a bit more into our costumes than some people. Not everyone at the party will be so into the costuming. There's usually an older couple who come "dressed as old people" they like to say.

Ah but G & K can't make it this year! They're going to be away somewhere I think. :( But I will bet there will still be various states of costumed-to-non.

Don't worry about costumes if you don't want to: We have a wide variety of folks in various states of costume-ry. Just because Mary and I go all-out doesn't mean everyone has to :)

The waistband looks fabulous! I really like the vinyl pattern.

And I cheated on my Willow outfit; hot-glued the trim around the cuffs instead of sewing. So much faster! but I guess you wouldn't want to do that if you need the pants to be actual pants afterward. :D

Yeah, I'm hoping to be able to reclaim the pants at some point. On the other hand, if I end up liking the way this thing comes out, I may want to wear it again, in which case I won't want to undo the pants unless I find a suitable alternate option.

At this point, I'm just pleased I'll have something to wear to the party that will at least somewhat be recognizable as fitting the theme, lol.

Yay for duct tape. What would we do without it. Belt/corset looks great from here

Duct tape is a pretty handy tool. :)
