It's fascinating, the things one can learn while researching ideas for fic. Take, for instance, the Gargoyle.

The word gargoyle itself comes from the Old French word Gargouille meaning throat or gullet. This word is used to describe the sound that is produced when water passes through the throat and mixes with air (origin of the word gargle).

Ah yes. One of the few things I remember from my high school French classes is that gargoyles were meant to serve the twin functions of downspouts and guardians against evil spirits.

I may or may not have learned this at some other point, but I certainly hadn't remembered it. The site that I found it on was pretty interesting, partly just an explanation of the origins of mythical beasts, partly acting as if they were real, not mythical.
