Dec. 20th, 2014 09:55 pmYesterday, one of the families I work with surprised me by bringing in orchids for all the teachers in our room. They are beautiful plants, and I hope I manage to not kill mine for at least a little while.

I've done a little research and it seems that the lack of sunlight in my apartment shouldn't be a problem, and I'm told that if I drop a few ice cubes in the pot once a week, that should be enough water. I'm a bit more concerned by the fact that my apartment is generally a good ten degrees cooler than they recommend for orchids, and I have very little control of that. And then there's the fact that I have three cats who all like to mess about with things that don't concern them. It's worrisome for the orchid, but also for the cats. At the moment it's living in the bathroom most of the time, as the warmest, moistest, most cat-free space.
Today has been fun. I got up early to go to breakfast with a friend, D. She usually has her husband and two small boys in tow (which is fine, I like them all) but today she managed to leave the family behind. We had breakfast at the Square Cafe and then moved over the 61 B cafe for tea, while we got all caught up. It was a much more relaxed and leisurely time than usual, due to the kids' absence.
I had about two hours after breakfast to vacuum and tidy up a bit, check email, etc. Then
ani_no_mouse came down from Grove City. Since my sisters and I aren't exchanging stockings this year, I was able to use that money to buy some essentials like socks and underwear. Very exciting, I know. I did splurge on a new set of pjs and a super soft fleecy bathrobe. After I left my purse in the car while shopping (and then ran all over the store trying to find it) and then left some of my shopping at the checkout counter (after paying for them - the lady at the counter actually met us out in the parking lot as we were heading back inside to find them), and then ANM grew frustrated in the parking lot, we decided we'd better eat sooner rather than later.
After lunch, we headed to the movie theater to see final segment of The Hobbit. I like the stadium seating at the Loew's, but good grief you have to put up with a lot of nonsense. The ticket start time was 3pm. For about fifteen minutes before start time we had previews for video games and ads for the Army. At 3:03 they finally started the movie previews and the movie itself didn't start until 3:24. But the neighborhood theaters are shutting down and there are not many other options than the big places like Loews.
Anyway, theater rant aside, the movie was about what I expected it would be. I'd read a Wired review that ended up being pretty accurate, about the physics defying unreality of all the CGI and such, just being over the top ridiculous, throwing in an elf/dwarf love story just to appease today's young girls, etc., throwing Legolas in and having him defying his dad in some sort of coming of age stupidity or something (I really have no idea what that was all about other than a kind of failed love triangle thing). And all of that stuff was super annoying in the movie. But somehow, the heart of Bilbo's story still managed to shine through in the most important parts, most of that due to Martin Freeman's excellent depiction of Bilbo.
Regardless of how I feel about the movies, I'm glad I finished it out on the big screen. It's been a long journey since I first started hearing the talk of someone making a movie of the Lord of the Rings. My reactions to all the movies have been pretty similar, with a mix of love and hate, but I'm glad to have gone on the journey.
After the movie we spent some time at Barnes & Noble, made a flying run to Petco for litter and cat food, and I got home just in time for the Pens game at 7. I'm going to be dead tired tomorrow, but it was a lovely day.

My thoughts on the Hobbit probably don't bear repeating. ;) Largely, I was bored to tears - so much fighting, so little emotional resonance. The few scenes with Bilbo were good, but it's like they barely remembered to have their titular character in it. Grrrr.

This was essentially the problem with the whole trilogy. PJ was so enthralled by what he could do with the current technologies that he totally lost track of the heart of the story.

Thank goodness. I'll be seeing it tomorrow.
