In my archives program, we've been following the debate over the Bush Presidential Library finding its home at Southern Methodist University. It's a much more interesting situation than I originally thought.

There would be two parts - a presidential library that would, supposedly, be non-partisan, but there would also be a policy institute that would have as it's goal the 'promotion of the Bush philosophy.'

Many of the faculty at SMU are protesting the Bush Library for this reason. There is also an attempt to get SMU to insist that Bush rescind Executive Order 13233 before allowing his Presidential Library to be built there.

You can read the most recent article about this at Inside Higher Ed.

I like the last part of the protest especially - the demand that Bush rescind Executive Order 13233.
I find the part about a think tank to "promote the Bush" philosophy horrifying.

I hadn't heard much about this "rest of the story." Definitely adds an interesting angle and some depth on the university faculty's resistance to accept the library. (Because I've been getting the -- possibly wrong -- impression that the administration are kind of OK with it, but the faculty are not.)

That's pretty much the same sense I've been getting from it. And it's not the library so much as the associated policy institute that presents the problem. I have to say, if Pitt was the University being approached, I'd be pretty discouraged if they just accepted it.
