And just like that, I am done (at least for the moment) with my archives project. I've spent the past few evenings pulling together a functionally searchable container list and writing up a finding aid, which I have just sent off to my director. At some point, she claims that she wants me to put together a presentation explaining/justifying my function as the center's archivist, at which time she'll re-evaluate whether or not to continue with the project. The summer months are usually a little bit hectic, so I don't expect to have to put that presentation together too soon.

I'm glad I got it all done, even if I didn't really want to end the project. If nothing else, I now have two projects (the other one from my internship) to put on my resume. Which I need to spruce up and start sending out again. I heard from my student loan people today and they are not too pleased with the lack of progress I've made paying them off.

Bullet notes:

*I got all the physical manipulation of archival stuff done today, yay! Still have to put the finding aid together, but that will be all computer work. Much easier, in some ways, although my arm isn't liking computer work much better than lifting/moving folders and boxes.

*Good news on the Dad front. He didn't have a heart attack, just food poisoning. He's got other stuff going on as well, probably a bad reaction to some of his meds, so he's not out of the hospital yet, but he doesn't need a pace maker.

Can't sleep. Arm hurts.

If I had a PCP I'd call and demand better drugs, but since I'd have to go back to the MedExpress place and spend a boat load of money, I'll just stay awake all night.

It should get better again once I'm finished with the archives project, but I still have another day of that, at least, and it's just going to make things worse. I'm very tempted to take today off, stay home and rest it up. I won't be able to take blocks of time to do the archives stuff after this week, but working on it in large blocks of time seems to be what's killing my arm anyway, so maybe I'll just go in to work an hour early every day next week and work on it in smaller chunks. My boss was very clear that it needs to be done by the end of the month.

I did manage to sleep a little bit a while ago. I dreamed that Evgeni Malkin brought cookies for the kids at work and we hung out for a bit. He babbled at me a lot in Russian, apparently about the quality of the mist in the back yard. And then we had a big party. But then I was vengefully eating a cookie shaped like a Wraith because apparently one had just recently attempted to kill me, and he didn't think that was very friendly of me. He wanted me to share the Wraith-shaped cookie with the Wraith in question. At least I have my dreams to entertain me, lol.

Another weekend over, another work week about to begin. After barely dipping my toe in the water the past five or six months (at least), I'm going to do some archiving this week. Time to wrap this project up and be done with it. I've also got parent conferences to line up and prepare for, so it will be a busy month.

I managed to stay awake all afternoon only by dint of drinking a lot of diet soda. Now, having drunk a lot of diet soda, I'll probably be wide awake all night. Nothing new there.

Hockey update:

*The Penguins won their game yesterday, leaving them up 3-2 in the series. They go back to Montreal tomorrow, where they could end the series if they could muster up the energy for back-to-back wins, something they haven't managed yet in this series.

*The San Jose Sharks eliminated the mighty Detroit Red Wings in five games. This is the first time in, I believe, four years that the Red Wings won't be in the Western Conference Finals. This makes me happy.

*The Vancouver Canucks just pulled off a win against the Chicago Blackhawks. Another reason to be happy. Vancouver and Phoenix were the two Western Conference teams that I was pulling for from the start of the playoffs. Phoenix got taken out by Detroit, but Vancouver made it through the first round, only to self-destruct when faced with Chicago in round two. Tonight was clearly a good game, however, and they beat Chicago 4-1. Chicago leads that series 3-2, so Vancouver needs another two straight wins to move on to the Conference finals. It's not likely, but it has been done before (most recently by Montreal in round one this year against the Capitals) but they've put up a fight, so good for them.

I'm wired

I'm all wired up on Dr. Pepper and kettle cooked blue potato chips. And maybe some Dove dark chocolate.

I started organizing files today. Spent some time in the morning rousing the admin staff to a proper appreciation of my need for archival boxes, asap. I felt a little bit like a prima donna, but I got what I wanted. Building Manager ordered me boxes this afternoon and he expects them to arrive early next week. Yay! Now I just need some place to put them once they're filled. Right at the moment, I'm working in a co-opted corner of the resource room, junky boxes piled high, some on the floor, some on one of the lunch carts, etc. At least with proper boxes I'll be able to tidy it up.

Now I have four lovely days off in a row. This is just about as good as it gets, people. Tomorrow, if I can overcome my natural laziness, I'm going to head out in search of turkey/cranberry/pumpkin pie cooked by someone not me. Maybe a visit to the grocery store, browse the bookstore, etc. If the weather's dicey, I'll just hang at home and be happy I'm not driving anywhere.

Happy Thanksgiving, to all who celebrate it. May you have a day of delicious food and good company.

What I want to be writing:

Negotiating with the Dead: An SGA Independent Atlantis fic dealing with secession and the power of archives - an AU that takes place after the end of season three. The idea came to me yesterday and I really, really want to at least attempt to write it. I think it could be a cool story if I could find the right approach for it.

What I'm supposed to be writing:

An oh-so-exciting paper on some aspect of the archival reference function being transformed or challenged by new technologies. And, to make it more fun, this paper is suppposed to be written in a particular style - I'm to pretend I'm writing it as a journal article or short presentation to other professionals in the field.

What I am writing:

Lj posts. Well, to be fair, I've got two-thirds of a page of the paper done (it's a 5-10 page paper). And it's not due until 9 am tomorrow morning, so I've got hours to go, but unfortunately I do have to go to work in a couple of hours.

Maybe what I'll write about is how archival reference functions would be transformed if archivists were able to use the ATA gene to access deeper layers of data in their systems. Yeah, cuz that would go over very well indeed, I'm sure.

Yeah, this is one of those days when I really hate being in grad school and kinda wish I could just go back to being an underemployed child care teacher.

In my archives program, we've been following the debate over the Bush Presidential Library finding its home at Southern Methodist University. It's a much more interesting situation than I originally thought.

There would be two parts - a presidential library that would, supposedly, be non-partisan, but there would also be a policy institute that would have as it's goal the 'promotion of the Bush philosophy.'

Many of the faculty at SMU are protesting the Bush Library for this reason. There is also an attempt to get SMU to insist that Bush rescind Executive Order 13233 before allowing his Presidential Library to be built there.

You can read the most recent article about this at Inside Higher Ed.
