There was new Lost on tonight, so of course I went out with the comic guys. Luckily I didn't screw up the VCR this time, so I was able to watch it when I got home.
So many thoughts swirling through my head right now. Wow! This was one of those episodes that make me fall in love with the show all over again. Then it's on to next week, with the love triangle from hell, that is so old it has mold growing on it. Please God, let one of those idiot men kill the other and put us all out of our misery.
Giving Claire amnesia was a nice twist. It preserves the mystery of the island very neatly. So, how did she get away from Ethan? How would a woman who is nine months pregnant escape from a man as strong and clever as Ethan seemed to be? On the other hand, if she was allowed to escape purposefully, what was the motive behind the 'I want her back and I'll kill them one by one until I get her' speech.
I loved the bit of backstory we got on Charlie tonight. Poor Charlie. He thought it would be so simple to scam that woman. Charm the pants off her, pick up one or two small but valuable items and vamoose. But he's got too much of a conscience for that and so it gets all complicated and painful for him. Especially when he tries to get a job and be respectable. How much fun was it watching him try to operate that copier? You have to give him credit, he tried to make the job work. He memorized the manual, did everything he could, when it would have been so much easier to just chuck the whole thing right from the get-go. That the whole thing went pear-shaped in the end was unavoidable. Makes you wonder what he spent the next year or two doing, until the plane crash.
He's got such a fixation on wanting to take care of others, and yet he so desperately needs someone to take care of him. When will we see that, eh? That's what I want to know. Charlie gets plenty of hurt, when will see some comfort?
I was waiting for him to do something stupid, so I wasn't at all surprised when he shot Ethan. I haven't made up my mind yet if I think it was smart or stupid, but I think, given what Charlie's been through, he couldn't have responded any differently. He needed Ethan to be taken out of the equation, and I think he's right that Ethan wouldn't have told them anything useful. Still, killing someone is an extremely serious, heavy thing, and Charlie is already carrying a very heavy load. Now I'm worrying about him. :(
Random conspiracy theories
I just had a weird thought. What if Ethan is a clone? I can see the interior of the island inhabited by a hive of Ethan look-alikes, sort of an X-Files kind of deal. He might have been on this island a lot longer than the french woman. There were those skeletons in the caves, after all, that Jack thought were probably at least fifty years old. It just seems so unlikely that he wouldn't know they would try to set him up, that he would fall prey to them so easily when all along he seems to have been the one in control. It was an awfully stupid mistake for him to have made and it doesn't make a lot of sense, to me, unless Ethan himself was expendable.
While I'm at it, I wonder if Ethan (or a pal of his) drugged Charlie and Claire so that they would be more pliable or to purposefully cause them to not remember anything after they were given the drug. If they'd been giving the drug to Claire for such an extended period of time, it could have caused retrograde amnesia as a side effect.

Right. I was going to do some writing tonight, but it's already midnight. I really want to get something done for the
hobbit_ficathon challenge, but it's going to be cutting it pretty close to see if I can come up with anything tomorrow evening. On the other hand, I had some good Troll Slayer thoughts at the gym this morning. If I can hold on to them for just a little while, I should be able to get a good start on the next chapter this weekend. :)
