Don't leave so soon, weekend!
Mar. 7th, 2010 09:18 pmIt was a very nice three-day weekend. Friday was as much sick day as vacation day, but I found some of my missing earrings, stashed away in a random drawer where I would never purposefully have looked for them, so it counted as a win.
Yesterday morning, I went to brunch at Pamela's with a work friend and her husband. This is the sort of place where each item of your meal comes on its own plate, so breakfast for three really requires a separate table. Yummy food, though. In the afternoon I listened to the Pens vs. Stars game (third win in a row for the Pens) then watched the first few episodes of Black Books. There for awhile everyone was talking about this show so I stuck it on my Netflix queue. I laughed so much! And then in the evening, it was Shaun of the Dead. Again with much laughing (although, being the wussy wuss that I am, I did find myself looking uneasily around my apartment afterwards, wondering how on earth I would ever survive the zombie apocalypse with so many ground floor windows).
Today started out nice and slow, with a lazy morning.
eve11 picked me up around 2:00 to go to the hockey game. Almost certainly my last outing to the old Civic Mellon Arena. I commemorated the event by buying a Tyler Kennedy (#48) t-shirt (he'll probably never be a superstar, but he's a great young player, and one of my admittedly many favorites). We had limited view seats and unfortunately, Eve's view was rather more limited than most by a giant pole at the end of the row. We ended up taking over some empty seats a row down and across the aisle at the beginning of the third. The game was a good one, for the most part. A low scoring grinder (final score, 2-1 Pens), as opposed to the past three high-scoring games, but the Pens pulled out a fourth win in a row. Back in December they did a five win stretch and hadn't managed more than two in a row since then, so this has been a great start to the final twenty games of the season. The last bit of the game was a little more quiet and sober than the rest, as Matt Cooke (#24 for the Pens) laid out Marc Savard (#91 for the Bruins) with a pretty nasty head shot. There has been endless talk in the NHL this season about hits to the head and how to stop them from happening, and players have gone out with concussions for significant portions of the season. This will almost certainly result in a multi-game suspension for Cookie (hockey players are insane about nicknames, are other athletes the same?). Savard was down on the ice, barely moving, for a good ten minutes, and was finally taken off on a stretcher. The latest update says he has a concussion and will be under observation overnight but didn't have to go to the hospital. It will probably be several games, though, before he's able to jump through all the concussion syndrome hoops and get back on the ice. It was a scary moment, something that no one wants to have happen to anyone. It's also the second time this season that Cooke gets suspended for a bad hit. I like Cooke and I honestly don't think he was doing it with intent to seriously injure, but he's gotta learn where to draw the line with his hits.
And now I'm home, lamenting the fact that the weekend went too fast and I have to go back to work tomorrow. Boo. But in few remaining hours before bedtime, I think I'll watch an episode or two of Las Vegas. It's a bit hard to take the show seriously, but I love it none the less.
