auntiemeesh: (running)
So, I engaged in some running today. I finally got off my butt about three weeks ago or so and started up again (after eight months off) but this was the first time I made it to the gym twice in the same week. The weather was perfect for an outdoor run, which means no ability to pace myself whatsoever. The last couple of track runs didn't go so well, with me running myself out well before my preferred three miles, but today it went swimmingly. I did three miles in 34:15, a minute and a half faster than Tuesday's run!

After the run, and I went to dinner at Aladdin's and ran into an old friend from our Farscape days that neither of us had seen in years. It was great to catch up with her.

And now I'm home with the kitties and my aching legs. They better get over themselves before I go to bed, because I am not interested in listening to them complain all night.

Thank you, all my lovely friends, for the kind and thoughtful birthday wishes. I've had a lovely day so far.

My dad called me first thing this morning, actually getting my birthday day right for the first time in years. He's had a lot of health problems this past year or so but he sounded a lot better than he has in a while, and it was only a little awkward talking to him.

Some friends treated me to a delightful brunch this morning. We went to a little place called Coca Cafe, which has the feel of a coffee house, but the kitchen of a restaurant. They open at 10, we got there at 10:05 and they already had a forty minute wait for a table! So after putting our names on the list, we wandered a block or two down the street to Espresso a Mano for some coffee and a warm place to wait.

As soon as we walked in the door, I could tell this was a place that takes their coffee seriously. I ordered a latte and discovered that I was right.

It also tasted really good.

We hung out with our coffees until a table opened up and then wandered back down the street to eat. I'd never been to Coca Cafe before, but I can definitely recommend it. I ordered the Almond French Toast, which came with strawberries and lemon cream sauce.

Since I was taking pictures, Friend D wanted to take a pic of me with my food. Good thing I made an effort to be presentable this morning!

The thing about today that I was not expecting was the inch of snow on the ground when I woke up, and the persistent snowfall that has continued all day, despite the fact that weather.com assured me this morning that it was raining. It's only just barely freezing, and the snow is sticking to every single little leaf, twig and branch. Very pretty in a rather bleak, monochromatic way.

Coming up: pictures of a walk on a snowy day )

And now, the sky is all pink with sunset, I'm in my snuggly Life is Good pjs, I'm getting ready to heat up some left over chicken vindaloo, I have dark chocolate to eat for dessert, and movies to pop into the dvd player. I declare this birthday a rousing success!

Went out and had boozy fun for the first time in two or three months. One of my co-workers is a hockey fan (she roots for the Capitals but I forgive her this minor sin since she's from D.C.) so we decided to watch some hockey. We went to Buffalo Blues, which I've never been to before, where we joined up with her boyfriend (and his friends). He's a Sabre's fan. And apparently BB shows all the games, so we would have been able to watch all three games that we had a collective vested interest in. I say apparently, because when we got there, we found out that Buffalo Blues was suffering a power outage (a bar, suffering a power outage, on a Friday = ouch!) and was going to close for the evening. So C and I deserted the group and ended up at Silky's, where at least the Capitals game was showing on one screen so C wasn't left totally hanging.

I haven't had anything to drink since the holidays so the two Screwdrivers I had have left me completely buzzed, but that's a good thing, because the Penguins got completely squashed and only the buzz is preventing me from being pretty pissed about that. Crappy game aside, I had a great time finally getting out of the house and hanging with a friend. C isn't quite the scifi geek I am, but we have remarkably similar tv tastes, so she has also watched most of the shows I like. Since her team was also being slaughtered (they were down 5-0 with three minutes left when we left the bar), it was good to have some other shared interests to focus on.

It's Friday, I'm a bit buzzed, and I've got a whole weekend ahead of me. It's a good thing.

Friend D and her family are heading to Australia for a month, tomorrow. So last night they had me over for dinner. D was very apologetic about having ordered in Chinese for the evening. She likes to cook and they were planning to grill something but the meat they had was bad. I didn't mind, since it's not about the food anyway. I enjoy hanging out with them and I got to spend a couple hours playing with the baby.

Baby S is now six months old and really hitting that fun baby age. He's been under the weather for several days but was still in a very pleasant mood. I got in a lot of baby holding time, which is always awesome. And then when he got tired and hungry, I was able to turn him over to mom, which was also awesome. We kept the little guy up a bit later than he's used to and D tried to put him to sleep before driving me home. He screamed and fought, absolutely refusing to go to sleep. Apparently he's never done that before, but I'm just too fun and he didn't want to sleep while I was still there. As soon as they gave up and let him be awake, he was all smiles and flirty eyes again. That boy is gonna be a heart breaker some day.

It was a very nice three-day weekend. Friday was as much sick day as vacation day, but I found some of my missing earrings, stashed away in a random drawer where I would never purposefully have looked for them, so it counted as a win.

Yesterday morning, I went to brunch at Pamela's with a work friend and her husband. This is the sort of place where each item of your meal comes on its own plate, so breakfast for three really requires a separate table. Yummy food, though. In the afternoon I listened to the Pens vs. Stars game (third win in a row for the Pens) then watched the first few episodes of Black Books. There for awhile everyone was talking about this show so I stuck it on my Netflix queue. I laughed so much! And then in the evening, it was Shaun of the Dead. Again with much laughing (although, being the wussy wuss that I am, I did find myself looking uneasily around my apartment afterwards, wondering how on earth I would ever survive the zombie apocalypse with so many ground floor windows).

Today started out nice and slow, with a lazy morning. [livejournal.com profile] eve11 picked me up around 2:00 to go to the hockey game. Almost certainly my last outing to the old Civic Mellon Arena. Cut for long-winded hockey talk )

And now I'm home, lamenting the fact that the weekend went too fast and I have to go back to work tomorrow. Boo. But in few remaining hours before bedtime, I think I'll watch an episode or two of Las Vegas. It's a bit hard to take the show seriously, but I love it none the less.

Today was 'help with B's yard sale' day. Once again, my actual usefulness was limited. Today I bought people coffee, twice. I also floated around the house, engaging in negotiations on some prices and lamely deferring to B on others. By two or two-thirty, it was pretty much all over, just in time for the hockey.

The hockey was fun. The Pens wiped the floor with the Flyers, shutting them out 6-0. It was pretty clear right from the beginning that the Pens were going to dominate, but the Flyers refused to give in, continuing to fight for every possibility. We were all really hoping for a good knock down, drag out fight, but all we got was a little scuffle with Hatcher and someone (maybe Malone?). But the point is, the Penguins are going to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since 1992. W00t! I say.

This is why I still get a little anxious when I'm on an unfamiliar bus route, even though I've been using the PAT system here for a good 18 years.

So, the plan was, grab the 74A to B's house to help him prepare for his garage sale, which takes place tomorrow. Sounded simple enough. I looked at the bus route and a google map of the area, and it appeared as though the bus ran pretty much right past B's house.

Yeah, not so much. According to B, the bus stop is only about a block away, but on some random other street that I didn't recognize. So I sat on the bus for a good half hour until we were circling around Greenfield. At this point, it was blatantly obvious that I had missed my stop. So I got off the bus and started walking. This was at Murray and Hazelwood, for those of you familiar with the area. I knew where I was, and I knew where I wanted to be, and I knew I was within reasonable walking distance (just over a mile). Problem was, the street that I wanted and the street I needed to take to get there are like incestuous siblings, merging, diverging, crossing, rejoining. And so, at any given intersection of the two of them, it was not exactly obvious which direction I should take to get where I wanted to be.

I did eventually get where I was going, however, and spent the day putting stickers and prices on a wide variety of his stuff. I also scored myself a cool new backpack to replace the old one with the hole in the bottom, a set of hand weights (3, 5, and 10lbs) and a kitty nail clipper, which the cats are in desperate need of.

Tomorrow I'm scheduled to go back and help with the garage sale itself, but I'll skip the bus and walk the two miles. It's just easier that way.
