Well, this is an interesting little puzzle. I have a plane ticket for Saturday. In order to board the plane, I need valid state or federal photo ID. I do not have ANY valid photo ID (my NH license expired in March and I foolishly let it slide). In order to get new photo ID, I need to present, among other things, a Social Security card. I have torn my apartment inside out and cannot find my social security card. Which means before I can get photo ID, I need to get a new card. However, in order to get a replacement for my social security card, I need valid photo ID.

Other forms of id they will accept:

Employer ID (we just get little name badges, no photo or anything)
Military ID (never been in the military)
Health insurance card (I'm currently uninsured)
School ID (my school id expired in 2008 and I don't think I still have it)

I have my NH license, but it expired in March.

I have my old passport, but it expired in 2004.

This is beyond annoying. I know I have a SS card around somewhere. I had it with my birth certificate for a long time, but it's not there anymore. I haven't used it for anything, so it can't have gone out of the house. It MUST be here somewhere. But it's already almost midnight and I have to get up early to get this taken care of before work tomorrow. I have gone through all the boxes and drawers and other places where it might have been stowed and just can't find it anywhere. I'm a bit worried it may have slipped down the crack behind the mantel in the living room (I'm almost positive I remember it being up there, with my birth certificate for a while at some point, for some reason, although both copies of my birth certificate are currently safely stowed in a desk drawer). Otherwise, it's possible Zoe ate it.

Tomorrow's going to be a long day.

This sounds like something I would do. I hope the SS card turns up or that they will take the expired passport or something. This is the stuff from which nightmares are made.

The ss card is stubbornly not turning up. So I just have to hope that the SS office will work with me. Unfortunately, I'm under a time crunch (as is everyone, I guess).

passport should work, even expired, because it trumps all others...

Such fun with those ID cards isn't it? I had something of a similar problem when I was getting euros before my trip to Italy. Here the banks have stopped using pictures on the cards so that it's not a valid ID any more. I don't have a driver's lisence so I don't have the most common form of ID and I don't walk around with my (almost 10 years old, and soon not valid any more) passport because it's, y'know, invaluable. So when I walked into the bank I used, used the card from that bank saying I wanted to withdraw money I couldn't because there was no picture on the card. I was pretty angry and I told the bank guy that not EVERYONE has a driver's lisence and that someone should rethink the picture on bank cards again because it was very useful. As a result I had to take money out of the ATM go back inside and have them exchanged into euros.

I hope things get sorted out more easily than you fear with the ID.

*hugs*

For many years I had only a passport as photo ID. I carried it around with me, too, because I was too dumb to know any better. I was really lucky that when I got mugged and my backpack was stolen, the kids that took it were even more stupid and didn't take the passport out before tossing it in a dumpster right next to where they mugged me.

*hugs*

I was only half an hour late to work in the end, so it worked out better than I expected.

There's always the "hand them the expired drivers license and look shocked when they tell you that it's expired" routine...

I was seriously considering that option, lol.

sorry for the stress. I know I'm bad because I keep my ssc in my wallet or I'd never know where it is.

This time I'm putting it in the same drawer as the birth certificate and the old passport, where I thought it was in the first place.

Glad it all worked out. Where are you flying off to, by the way?
