I'm scrolling through old lj posts trying to find lotr fic that I never archived at SOA (all of it was written with word perfect so I can't open any of my old files). Haven't found any fic yet but came across this little gem of SGA/archives crossover:
What I am writing:

Lj posts. Well, to be fair, I've got two-thirds of a page of the paper done (it's a 5-10 page paper). And it's not due until 9 am tomorrow morning, so I've got hours to go, but unfortunately I do have to go to work in a couple of hours.

Maybe what I'll write about is how archival reference functions would be transformed if archivists were able to use the ATA gene to access deeper layers of data in their systems.

What I especially like about this is the cavalier attitude I had towards 5-10 page papers due the next day. "Meh, I'll get around to it eventually."

My phone went all wonky on me yesterday. It was fine, I replied to a text from a friend without trouble. And then next time I went to send another text, it had turned itself off and wouldn't turn back on again. I'm pretty sure there were no 'low battery' type warnings going on, but I plugged it in and gave it awhile to recharge (like, a couple hours). Still wouldn't turn on when I went to bed, so I was expecting to have to go to the Apple Store today.

Luckily, when I plugged it in for another test this morning, it at least turned on, although the battery was super low. And this evening it charged all the way up in about an hour. As I think about it, I remember that when I updated to iOS9 and then couldn't use the phone because I didn't know my wifi password, I encountered something about someone having a lot of battery trouble after they updated to OS9. All they had to do was turn off cellular data for all their apps, except when they were using them. I'm going to give that a try for the weekend and hope that takes care of the problem.

In the meantime, I'm taking advantage of a rare night with no baseball, hockey, Doctor Who or anything else compelling and I'm going to force myself to jump start that damned missing creativity of mine. Wish me luck!

It's been so long since I wrote, let alone posted any fanfic. My stories do still, very occasionally, get favorited over on FF.net and yesterday someone posted a comment on 'Courage' about a novel contest at Inkitt. Which made me think maybe it wouldn't hurt to go back and look at 'Courage' or 'Troll Slayer' and see if either of them could be polished up to be at least slightly better than they currently are. And ran into the brick wall of having written them with word perfect a million years ago. D'oh!

So now I'm booting up the old laptop (several generations newer than the beast I wrote those stories on) to see if I can open them there. Otherwise, I'll have to see if I can remember my user name and password for either FF.net or Stories of Arda to go in and get them there. I do have a lot of the beta chapters that [livejournal.com profile] pipspebble did for me, in usable form, so that might help at least a little.

Honestly, I'm not really sure what the point of this endeavor is, but maybe it would jump start some creative juices and I might get an idea or something to do more writing. I would love to do more writing but I seem to have lost all ability to follow through from inception of idea to fully fleshed out story. So yeah that's what I'm doing tonight while the Penguins decide whether they remember how to play hockey or not.

Doctor Who

Season nine starts next weekend and in an effort to gear up, I'm rewatching the tail end of season seven and some (maybe all, who knows) of season eight. I started with "The Day of the Doctor" and am now moving on to "The Time of the Doctor."

And then I got side-tracked chasing down all the prequels and little specials that I somehow missed through totally not being at all tuned in to the fandom of Doctor Who. So, yay, lots of fun 'new' content for me today, including this week's prequel to the ninth season.

Wow, the last month and a half has really beat me up. I slept almost 12 hours last night, only waking once to give the cats their breakfast before passing out again.

I had fun last night, though. After work, I went to a Pirates game with [livejournal.com profile] eve11. Our seats were high up but almost directly behind home plate. What a fabulous view of the game and the city!

I foolishly thought it would be a good idea to have an adult beverage, despite being completely exhausted and borderline dehydrated (half a cup of coffee as the only drink all day). Three sips in to my Hard Cider I was already nauseated by the sweetness. I ducked out to buy a bottle of water and made it back just in time to see the Pirates score their first run of the evening. It was a good game, resulting in a win despite a shaky start by Morton (who seems to think it's mandatory to give up a couple runs in the first inning).

Today has been super lazy. Crawled out of bed a little before noon and I'm now just hanging out, watching the Penguins rookie tournament game with the Ottowa Senators. At the first intermission, the Pens are up 1-0. Go Pens!
auntiemeesh: (dancing rosie)
I've done almost nothing this long weekend and I'm feeling exhausted by it. Today I went to Macy's with [livejournal.com profile] lyda_pearl so she could do some of her shopping, and then she took me to the grocery store so I could do my shopping. And then I did one load of laundry. And it's not even 7 and I just want to lay my head down and rest. Boo, body, boo!
auntiemeesh: (yoga tree)
I went to see "A Walk In the Woods" today.

Movie thoughts )

In other news, I totally fell off the yoga wagon when I moved. There was a lot of transition while I was here, there, and everywhere. And then there was chaos here while I was trying to get everything unpacked and fitted into the available spaces. And then there was exhaustion and depression and confusion (I have thick carpeting and the yoga mat won't lay flat and nice with carpeting so I'm not sure what the best thing to do is).

BUT. As always, I want to lose a bit of weight and get a lot more toned than I currently am. Also as always, my goal is next year's Dragon Con. I want to be stronger, fitter, and have more stamina next time I go (the last couple years I have found myself crapping out early most days and being overly cranky because I'm too tired/hungry/not something enough to make it through the days). I think the right yoga routines will help with this a lot. Also, I'm walking consistently again, which will also help, at least a little.

My long-term goals are:

*Lose 10-15 lbs
*flatten the abs
*tone up my arms
*gain general day-to-day stamina so I'm not exhausted all the time (this is the one I'm not entirely sure how best to accomplish)

Short term goals:

*Walk at least 20 miles every week for the next month
*Do yoga at least five times a week
*Eat healthy portion sizes

I had to work extra hours almost every day this week (and last Friday) so the bosses took pity on me and sent me home a little early today. Yay! Three day weekend and I got an extra hour and a half of free time. And a promise that next week I can just work my regular hours (although I have an early meeting planned with one set of parents on Tuesday morning).

Since I had extra time, I'm feeling super boring and uncreative without any crafty projects to work on, I stopped at Target on the way home. They have limited options when it comes to the kinds of 'crafty' that I enjoy, but ended up spending an inordinate amount of money anyway. I've been watching, for a couple of years, friends on FB who do a letter-posting thing one month every year, and then I happened to wander down the paper aisle at Target and they had all sorts of fun paper and washi tape and colorful pens, etc. I ended up getting a couple different kinds of paper, pens, one thing of washi tape (that stuff is EXPENSIVE) and some stickers, and I'm going to 'write' some fun little letters/notes to every whose address I'm in possession of. If anyone here feels like they get too many bills and not enough fun stuff in the mail, leave your address in the comments (I'll screen the comments) and I'll add you to the list!

Then, when I came out of Target, the sun was just getting ready to peek out from behind a big fluffy but sort of dense cloud and the sky just looked amazing.

And then, about half a block from home on a hot, sweaty afternoon, I came upon a young boy selling fresh squeezed lemonade. Not a huge lemonade fan in general, but it is just about right when one is feeling hot and tired. Mmm, mmm!
auntiemeesh: (sewing woman)
I'm not going to Dragon Con this year, which is sad, but in order to give me something to look forward to, I decided to pick a costume to start working on for next year. Yes, I know there is no guarantee that I'll be able to go next year either, but I'm starting some costume plans anyway. I need good things to look forward to in order to survive this particular year (my life is oriented around school years rather than calendar or fiscal years) which is shaping up to be one of the hardest and least pleasant I've had in a long time.

So, what I need to be on the lookout for:
*aubergine wool/suiting fabric
*cameo brooch
*black braiding
*bracelets
*black parasol/umbrella
*possibly black boots (I may have something that will do in a pinch but I don't remember if I kept them or not)
*white cotton with aubergine striping (this may be something I have to fudge)
*little black hat
*fake fruits for little black hat
*fake phone cover
*sewing patterns for suit/shirt

There have already been a lot of people doing this costume so by next year it won't be anything like new, but I don't particularly care. New characters/costumes tend to show up too late for someone with a limited budget and time to get them done by Dragon Con that year. I need to plan far in advance.

As always, I want to lose a little weight before starting in on actual sewing, but this gives me a full year to work on that as well as gathering the materials and accessories. And, also as always, I'm prepared to have this be the costume I want to do now, and then six months from now have not started it yet and find something I'd much rather do at that time. But for now, this is my goal. And it's a good one. I've never been a Baddie before. Should be fun!

And yes, I know I'm being a bit vague. That's also part of the fun.

2048

I'm not the greatest at these kind of games. I mean, I don't even remember how long I've been playing 2048 and it's cousin Doctor Who 2048 without winning. But tonight, my friends, I am the champion! Finally got a win!
auntiemeesh: (coffee)
So tomorrow an email goes out to the families who have children in my room to tell them that both of the other teachers in our team, as well as our new full-time student worker, are quitting, effective almost immediately. By next Wednesday, a team that should consist of four full time teachers, a part-time assistant teacher and a couple of very part-time college students is going, instead, to consist of me and a part-time assistant teacher.

My program manager is going to spend a lot of time in my room, helping us just to stay in ratio. I can't wait to experience the parent response tomorrow afternoon. It should be interesting.
auntiemeesh: (dancing rosie)
By the time I got out of work today I was so pissed off I was about ready to kick a hole in a wall and then stuff somebody's head in it. I have a few candidates in mind, too. But I have managed to use that rage to get at least a little bit done this evening.

I stopped at Home Depot and bought a trash bin for my little 'outdoor' space, so the trash no longer has to sit in my apartment until trash day. And there were no living roaches anywhere in sight when I got home, so I forced myself to put on my big girl pants and unpack some of my kitchen stuff. I now have most of my dishes (except my mugs, they're who knows where) and pots/pans unpacked. There's one more box that I need to get unpacked tonight and then there's no more boxes in the kitchen. The living room is a cluttered mess but mostly unpacked. The bedroom is nothing short of a disaster. I've just been shoving boxes in there to get them out of the way of the things I need to do in other parts of the apartment.

On the plus side, it's not quite so hot this week and the apartment hasn't felt like a sauna when I get home from work, so I feel a little less guilty about leaving the cats here all day long while I escape to go to work.
auntiemeesh: (dancing rosie)
In theory the roach guy came today. I could see no indications when I got home that anyone else had been here, other than the cats being in deep hiding and the kitchen light being on. Since it's entirely possible that I left the light on and the cats are still in OMFG what's happened?!?! mode, neither of those indicators is very good. Plus, there was at least one roach still alive and kicking when I got home. Ick!

I'm sure I'll get used to this place eventually. And maybe the roach guy really was here and I just need to be patient for a few days and the problem will disappear. And I'll figure out how to keep it bearably cool all day long so the cats don't suffer from heat prostration while I'm at work, and I'll get used to the fact that every time my upstairs neighbor moves, it sounds like the floor is about to give way under him and land him and all his flooring in my apartment. I've gotten used to crappy places before, I'll get used to this one, too. I lived for over a year with an upstairs neighbor who was under house arrest for attempting to stab someone with a knife. As far as I know, none of my neighbors are homicidal, so that puts me ahead of the game, right.
auntiemeesh: (third doctor)
Watching The Claws of Axos (Third Doctor and Jo). After the first episode, I must say my impression is not favorable.

spoilers )
auntiemeesh: (dancing rosie)
* I slept in soooooo late (probably because I couldn't sleep to save my life last night, but still, it was glorious).

* I gave the cabinets another good scrub and decided they are clean enough to bring into the apartment. Probably not clean enough to stop working on them, but no longer so dirty that I get irreversibly contaminated just brushing up against them.

* I got a load of laundry done, which means clean clothes to work all week, yay! (I should make some effort to fold that at some point this evening.)

* I ran the dishwasher, which means clean spoons!

* Remembered to do the Better Kid Care workshop I signed up to do. Two hours of Professional Development down, 12 to go.

* Did my yoga and didn't fall over despite being in a weird twisty position balancing on one foot at a time.

* Packed up five boxes of books and two boxes of dvds.

* Overcame my radio's strong desire to not play anything other than static, in order to listen to the second half of the Pirates game. Too bad it was the losing half, but still.

* Ate yummy nachos but put the ice cream brownie sundae thing away for another day.

* Watched a couple of season one episodes of NCIS. Oh, hai Lt. Bud Roberts! (Yes, I was madly in love with JAG for many years.)

* Played aluminum foil ball toss with Mal and snuggled with Zoe.

A good day

I met up with a friend this morning for lunch and a movie. We went to the Waterfront, ate lunch at Panera (ooh, exciting, I know you all are so jealous!) and saw Mr. Holmes. I'm so out of the movie loop that I hadn't even heard of it until yesterday, when looking for a movie that I might not hate to see. And I'm happy to report that far from hating it, I found it very good. The make-up and acting used to take Ian McKellen from mid-seventies to early-mid nineties was incredibly well done and convincing. I won't include any spoilery thoughts since I'm too lazy to put in a cut, but I liked the movie quite a lot and recommend it.

It was good to spend some time with T. I don't get to see her very often because between her crazy work schedule and her young son, she's not free very often. So that was good. And then, almost as soon as I got home, it was time to head out again. [livejournal.com profile] lyda_pearl picked me up and we made a quick trip to Construction Junction so that I could see about getting a set of reclaimed cabinets to make my platform bed.

I know, I said I was too lazy for a cut. But this got long. )
auntiemeesh: (dancing rosie)
I'm a day late because I gave myself Monday off. It was a long (fun) weekend, which I do want to recap but not in this post, but by Monday afternoon I was tired and headachey after a long drive so I took the day off.

So today is day fourteen of the yoga challenge. Some of the positions and movements have become familiar enough that I can follow along without looking at the laptop screen the whole time, which is super helpful in actually settling into the movements and poses. Every few days, however, we get new things, often very challenging, that still require a lot of looking at to see exactly what I should look like.

I'm still really enjoying it. Pushing myself to keep working on the things that are most difficult. Most days I just do whatever the yoga practice of the day is, but some days, like today, I add a little extra afterwards. Today was a short practice with moves that I was mostly familiar with, with one or two extra burns added in. Afterwards I did some V-boats (no idea what they are really called) stretching up with arms and out with legs, then pulling back in. I did sixteen of those before my body said enough. Then two 40 sec planks and then the side arm planks for five seconds each. My left elbow felt really dodgy but held up, barely. The right arm plank actually is starting to feel pretty good.

I debated doing some 'pushups' but decided my elbow'd had enough so I did fifer scissors instead (a set of 15).
Then grabbed the dumbbells and did one set each of bicep curls (25), overhead lifts (20) and upright rows (25). And then my arms/hands/fingers were so wonky it took about ten minutes to type the first paragraph of this post so I think that's enough. I suspect I'll be sore tomorrow but if I am, it will be for a good reason.

The cats have come to accept it really well. Even though I'm often doing my yoga right around the time they think they should be fed their dinner, they mostly leave me alone while I'm on the yoga mat. Surprisingly, this only took two or three days for them to figure out.

I'd like to be eating smaller portions of healthier foods with fewer desserts, but that continues to be a work in progress.
auntiemeesh: (dancing rosie)
I opened up the dishwasher to load it up and the whole thing rocked forward. Apparently the screws that stabilized it had come out. I put the one I could find back in but also filed a maintenance request to have them come out and find another screw for it.

At the same time, I've been noticing a growing stench in the apartment which seems to be coming from the drain in the kitchen. I've cleaned, run the garbage disposal to try to get rid of anything lurking in there, cleaned again. Still really foul odor wafting through the apartment. Joy! So I've put in a second maintenance request for them to look at that as well.

The dishwasher doesn't bug me as much, but I really hope they're able to take care of the drain smell by tomorrow so I don't have to put up with it for long.

In brighter news, I did manage to get a decent amount done today - groceries bought, laundry washed and dried (still waiting to be folded), area rugs vacuumed, and yoga done. I also got made my Uhaul reservation in preparation for moving. Getting closer every day!
auntiemeesh: (dancing rosie)
I've started a thirty day yoga challenge today. Today's session as about 35 minutes long, all gentle movements. I bought the yoga mat and a dvd a couple months ago and ran into some complications. First, the workout on the dvd is about 1.5 hours long and even though it's a beginner workout, it left me super, super stiff afterwards. And there were lots of props needed - chairs, blocks, and a lot of 'do this against a wall' sort of thing which my current apartment doesn't really let me do while keeping the tv in view. This is shorter, a much gentler introduction, and so far doesn't need any props, even a wall.

Things that I became aware of:
*My back - I tend to lean forward and slump a lot, so I find it more and more difficult to find that full-upright posture, especially without a mirror to check in with - that may be another thing I need to get once I move to the new apartment. I also get achy pretty quickly. Large, heavy breasts do not help with this at all.
*At least I haven't entirely lost all of my flexibility since I've mostly stopped going to the gym. I can pull my ankles right in and keep my knees down on the floor with little difficulty.
*Oh hey, there's both planking and a sort of bent knee fifer scissors move (which I used to do all the time when I did my aerobics tape a million years ago). Good thing I've been practicing those things a bit.
*Yoga plus cats is... interesting. Mal spent the first ten minutes headbutting me. At one point right in the middle of my torso, hard enough to almost knock me down. I hope that they get used to this and learn that it is futile to ask for my attention when I have the yoga mat out.
*My belly is getting a bit thick, sadly. Belly and boobs felt like they were in the way of some of the moves. I guess I'll get used to it. And in theory, I'm working towards slimming down, although it's been several years since I've been able to transition from theory to reality on that score.
*I started about forty-five minutes to an hour after eating and, especially in the more curled up poses at the end, I could really feel the food in my tummy. I will definitely need to do the yoga before eating, rather than after.
*All that deep breathing through the nose has told me it's time to scoop the cat boxes. I'm off to make the kitties happy!
